Main Function
The Accountant is responsible for managing the financial records, accounting processes, and financial reporting of the construction company. The role ensures accurate recording of transactions, effective cost control, project accounting, tax compliance, payroll processing, budgeting, andfinancial reporting while supporting project profitability and organizational growth.
Role Responsibilities
Financial Accounting
- Maintain accurate booksof accounts in accordance withapplicable accounting standards.
- Record daily financial transactions and prepare journal entries.
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements.
- Maintain the generalledger and subsidiary ledgers.
- Perform monthly bankreconciliations.
- Reconcile supplier, customer, and company accounts.
- Maintain the fixedasset register.
Project Accounting
- Monitor project costsagainst approved budgets.
- Track project expenditures by project, location, and cost code.
- Prepare project costreports for management.
- Analyze project profitability and cost variances.
- Ensure all project expenses are properly allocated.
- Work closely withProject Managers to monitor projectfinancial performance.
- Prepare work-in-progress (WIP)reports.
Budgeting and Cost Control
- Assist in preparing annual budgets andproject budgets.
- Monitor operational and project expenditures.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities.
- Prepare budget variance analyses.
- Ensure expenditures remainwithin approved budgets.
Accounts Payable
- Process supplier invoices and payments.
- Verify invoices againstpurchase orders and delivery notes.
- Reconcile supplier statements.
- Ensure timely paymentof vendors andsubcontractors.
Accounts Receivable
- Prepare customer invoices.
- Monitor outstanding receivables.
- Follow up on overdue payments.
- Reconcile customer accounts.
Payroll Administration
- Process monthly payroll.
- Calculate statutory deductions.
- Ensure timely remittance of:
- PAYE
- Pension
- NHF (where applicable)
- NSITF
- Industrial Training Fund(ITF)
- Maintain payroll records. Tax Compliance
- Prepare and filetax returns.
Compute:
- Company Income Tax
- Value Added Tax (VAT)
- Withholding Tax (WHT)
- PAYE
- Liaise with taxauthorities during audits.
- Ensure compliance with Nigerian tax laws.
Cash and Treasury Management
- Monitor cash flow.
- Prepare weekly and monthly cash flow forecasts.
- Manage petty cash.
- Monitor bank balances.
- Support treasury operations.
Internal Controls and Compliance
- Ensure compliance with company financial policies.
- Support internal and external audits.
- Maintain proper documentation of financial transactions.
- Safeguard company assets.
- Strengthen financial controls to minimize fraudand errors.
Financial Reporting
- Prepare monthly management accounts.
- Generate financial reportsfor management.
- Provide project financial performance reports.
- Present financial analyses to management.
- Support strategic financial planning.
Inventory and Asset Management
- Monitor inventory transactions.
- Reconcile inventory records.
- Account for construction materials.
- Conduct periodic asset verification.
Qualifications and Requirements
Education and Certifications
- Bachelor\'s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.
- ACA, ACCA, ICAN,or ANAN certification is highly preferred.
- Master\'s degree or MBA is an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of 2 years of accounting experience, preferably in the construction industry.
- Experience with project accounting and cost control.
- Knowledge of construction contracts and projectcosting.
- Experience with accounting software (e.g., Sage,QuickBooks, SAP, Oracle, Microsoft Dynamics, or similar ERP systems).
