    Packaging Manager - Porthacourt

    The Key Purpose of this role is to manage and co-ordinate the Packaging Department in order to achieve the required standard of product quality and output in the most efficient and effective manner.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities:

    Manage plant, process and systems

    • Translates and implements packaging, manufacturing and business strategies across the packaging hall.
    • Ensure that all team members are fully conversant with the VPO.
    • Develop and drive implementation plans to progress our VPO Principles / agreed VPO Pillar Blocks in order to sustain results.
    • Ensures conformance to Plant and Packaging specifications and standards.
    • Drives maintenance integrity to maximize equipment availability and reliability while ensuring engineering integrity and close partnership with Maintenance Manager.
    • Optimises process capability.
    • Leads packaging projects as required.
    • Coordinates Packaging logistics, shift patterns and run strategies to maximize GLY, FTE productivity and overall supply reliability.
    • Packaging Productivity.
    • Proactively control fixed and variable costs.
    • Minimise waste.
    • Manage, measure and monitor packaging effectiveness through: Packaging efficiency, Trade quality, Raw material usage rate, Waste through beer loss
    • IQMS parameters.
    • Production costs per Hl to global benchmarks.
    • Maintenance cost per Hl to global benchmarks.
    • Responsible for the overall reliability of the packaging hall.

    Team Leadership

    • Lead the packaging team in a manner that engenders ownership, empowerment and team interaction.
    • Lead the development of packaging team goals and ensure these are communicated and understood by team members.
    • Conduct regular Packaging team goal review sessions, and conduct regular one-on-one and performance reviews.
    • Ensure training need analyses are conducted and training plans developed for team members.
    • Ensure appropriate competencies are developed in the team, and ensure cross skilling occurs within the packaging team.

    Safety and Housekeeping

    • Ensure that the packaging team apply proper safety and housekeeping procedures, and adhere to all legal requirements when carrying out their tasks
    • Ensure implementation of the appropriate SAB and legislative policies (such as OSH act) on safety and housekeeping
    • Ensure that safety and housekeeping receive the appropriate focus through regular checks and safety audits
    • Where unsafe work practices have been identified, the packaging manager is responsible for correcting this
    • Ensures adherence to PPE policy
    • General production housekeeping
    • Safe maintenance practices audited
    • Ensure adherence to the VPO safety pillar in the packaging department with regular coaching and OWD’s done
    • Ensures adherence to SHE system requirements
    • Drive Safety and legal compliance in the Packaging Hall

    Key Attributes and Competencies:

    • A superior performance track record indicating a disciplined work ethic with passion at maintaining quality
    • Demonstrated understanding of relevant legislation, specifically health and safety and labour legislation
    • Proven experience in managing Industrial Relations within the workforce
    • Managing people ability as well as ability to drive performance
    • Leadership ability (ability to lead the packaging hall)
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills
    • Ability to develop and control budgets
    • Ability to implement appropriate HR processes to manage, motivate and develop people
    • Ability to manage complex projects of a significant amount
    • Ability to facilitate problem solving in a team forum
    • High level of resilience and ability to operate in a high-pressure environment

    Minimum Requirements:

    • BSc Engineering or equivalent Engineering degree
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in Packaging Management with deep expertise in asset management
    • Experience of managing and running a high-speed packaging line would be highly advantageous
    • A minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing people
    • Demonstrated experience in driving commercial decisions in a packaging hall (financial, operational, people)
    • Demonstrated experience in leading VPO in a Brewery environment

    Packaging Inspection and Coding

    The Key Purpose of this role is to performs activities related to inspection and coding optimisation and apply VPO principles. The Inspection and Coding Specialist must ensure a safe and healthy working environment and supports the installations of process control relevant electrical systems, as well as to maintain, calibrate, repair equipment, optimize plant and associated devices to ensure plant availability and product quality.

    Key Roles and Responsibilities:

    Maintain a safe and healthy working environment

    • Comply with safety, health and environmental procedures and legislation.
    • Maintain safety and housekeeping standards.

    Maintain, calibrate, repair equipment and optimize plant and associated devices

    • Troubleshoot Packaging inspection & coding systems.

    • Interpret process description specifications and conduct modifications / optimizations of process control software as per specifications and software standards. Identify process control software deviations and resolve or 
    • recommend solutions. Support the process control software change management process.
    • Identify and resolve equipment malfunctions, working with manufacturers and field representatives as necessary to procure replacement parts.
    • Support the development of and upgrade preventative maintenance procedures for inspection & coding systems.
    • Maintain working knowledge of new technology instrumentation, software, etc., through reading and/or attending conferences, workshops or other training.
    • Provide engineering/projects support and recommendations for new and existing equipment with regard to installation, upgrades and enhancement.
    • Maintain process control software integrity and security.
    • Comply with safety, health and environmental procedures and legislation.
    • Locate plant, equipment, spares, and relevant documentation / systems.
    • Plan and prepare the job.
    • Carry out repairs / maintenance.
    • Maintain safety and housekeeping standards.
    • Continuously improve (optimize) plant, process equipment and systems.
    • Apply 5S standards and practices in the workplace.
    • Operate and control the process according to SOP’s.

    Work in Teams

    • Communicate effectively in teams.
    • Contribute to self and team development.

    Apply the VPO principles and practices

    • All work is carried out using the VPO principles.

    Minimum Requirements:

    • Min – Electrical or Instrumentation.
    • Trade tested Millwright or electrician/ National Diploma Engineering.
    • Min – 3 - 6 months on the job training plus Vendor Maintenance.
    • 6 - 9 months on the job plus Siemens S7 PLC Training.
    • Routine electrical and instrumentation maintenance on similar. Brewing and E&F plants.
    • Comprehensive Packaging, Brewing and E&F plants equipment and process knowledge.
