    Health and Safety Supervisor - Logistics / Haulage

    Location: Calabar, Cross River

    Job Overview

    • A highly reputable haulage company looking to engage the services of a Health and Safety Supervisor to facilitate compliance with health and safety guidelines.
    • The ideal candidate would be responsible for recruitment and verification of drivers, journey management planning, compliance and monitoring and providing advice on measuresto minimize hazards or unhealthy situations.

    Key Functions of the Role

    • Support the development of safety policies and programs
    • Recruit and train drivers.
    • Monitor and ensure compliance to all safety policies
    • Advise and train all other personnel on various safety-related topics i.e. PPE, etc
    • Conduct risk assessment and enforce preventative measures
    • Inspect premises and the work of personnel to identify issuesor non-conformity (e.g. not using protective equipment)
    • Oversee installations, maintenance, disposal of substances etc.
    • Stop any unsafe acts or processes that seem dangerous or unhealthy
    • Record and investigate incidents to determine causes andhandle worker’s compensation claims
    • Prepare reports on occurrences and provide statistical information to upper management
    • Outline safe operational procedures which identify and take into account all relevant hazards
    • Carry out regular site inspections to check that policies and procedures are being properly implemented
    • Prepare health and safety strategies and develop internal policy
    • Lead in-house training with managers and employees about health and safety issues and risks
    • Keep records of inspection findings and produce reports that suggest improvements
    • Record incidents and accidents and produce statistics for managers
    • Any other duties as may be assigned

    Educational Requirements

    • B.Sc / BA in safety management or relevant field is preferred
    • Certificate in health and safety

    Experience:

    • Minimum of 7 years of experience working as a Health and Safety Supervisor
    • Experience in the transport/logistics industry is a must
    • Must be located in Calabar or willing to relocate

    Required Skills:

    • Proven experience as safety officer and working with drivers.
    • In depth knowledge of legislation (e.g. OSHA/EPA) and procedures.
    • Knowledge of potentially hazardous materials or practices.
    • Experience in writing reports and policies for health and safety.
    • Familiarity with conducting data analysis and reporting statistics.
    • Proficient in MS Office; Working knowledge of safety management information systems is a plus
    • Outstanding organizational skills.
    • Diligent with great attention to detail.
    • Excellent communication skills with the ability to present and explain health and safety topics.
    • Must be agile.

    Fleet Officer

    Location: Calabar, Cross River

    Job Overview

    • A highly reputable haulage company looking to engage the services of a Fleet Officer.
    • The ideal Candidate will be responsible for helping management select the right vehicles and maintaining them in good operating condition to enable the company meet its distribution objectives efficiently and cost-effectively.

    Responsibilities

    • Oversee assigned fleet’s operations
    • Route surveys and planning
    • Monitor and report daily trucks turn-around time
    • Direct activities related to dispatching, routing, and tracking vehicles
    • Direct investigations to verify and resolve all complaints relating to fleet management or drivers conduct
    • Obtain and maintain annual inspections certification by regulatory authorities or in line with contractual obligations from clients
    • Obtain and maintain all truck licensing, registrations and permits
    • Oversee proper use of fuel/diesel rations; maintain log and account for fuel/diesel and oil storage tanks
    • Develop strategies for greater fuel efficiency.
    • Coordinate daily pre-trip and post-trip truck inspections
    • Utilize GPS systems in conjunction with tracking unit to monitor drivers and track vehicles at all locations daily and in case of theft.
    • Conduct, in conjunction with the tracking unit, proper tracking of drivers in transit to ensure prompt and target time of delivery
    • Take prompt inventory of truck at the site of an accident or incident and document properly
    • Ensure prompt handling and coordination of rescue operations of company’s vehicles, personnel and goods, whenever the need arises
    • Recommend cost cutting strategies in order to maximize profits.
    • Ensure compliance with Federal transport laws and regulations.
    • Any other activities as required.

    Educational Requirements

    • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree from a recognized tertiary institution
    • M.Sc. in Transport or Logistics is an added advantage

    Experience

    • Minimum 4 years’ experience in supply chain management, including, haulage, logistics, and fleet management and customer service operations

    Required Skills and Abilities:

    • Complete and up-to-date knowledge of Federal and State transportation regulations.
    • Ability to accurately calculate load arrival times and other performance parameters.
    • Must have a working knowledge of computers and Intermediate to advanced level Microsoft Excel with a manifest readiness to learn company specific fleet management software quickly
    • Ability to develop and maintain an accurate record-keeping system
    • Prioritization: Understanding of what is the single most important task at any given moment.
    • Ability to think on one’s feet and make decisions quickly
    • Listening skills: Willing to listen to drivers, office personnel, management, state and federal regulators and their concerns.
    • Handle emergencies: Ability to stay calm and take decisions quickly
    • Differentiate driver issues, decipher problems versus complaints and proffer relevant solutions
    • Effective communication which is the ability to speak professionally and remain calm under immense pressure.
