    Typesetter

    Job Overview

    • Typesetting involves arranging text and visuals according to a specialized design and creating finalized documents prepared for printing.
    • As a typesetter at Straight Gate Publishers Limited, you are required to have both design and technical skills.
    • These skills are needed to create designs that are visually appealing and reader-friendly documents.
    • Ensuring that the final product corresponds with the publisher’s standards and specifications.

    Job Duties

    • Creatively format text by applying appropriate font styles, sizes, and spacing as per specifications to enhance readability and comprehension for readers.
    • Creating layout designs for various publications, and strategically arranging text within columns, pages, and sections to ensure consistency in fonts and designs while adhering to the publisher's branding guidelines.
    • Diligently perform thorough proofreading to identify and correct typographical errors, grammatical mistakes, and formatting issues to ensure accuracy.
    • Seamlessly incorporate visuals, graphics, and illustrations into the material to enrich the design and enhance the reader’s engagement.
    • Carefully maintain accurate word breaks and spacing to achieve well-structured and neatly aligned columns.
    • Effectively use typesetting software and desktop publishing tools, such as CorelDraw, to efficiently execute layout and formatting tasks.
    • Actively collaborate with editors, designers, and other publishing teams to ensure a smooth transition of design concepts into the finished product.

    Key Requirements

    • The applicant must be computer literate, while a National Diploma (ND) in Art or any related discipline with experience in desktop publishing can be an added advantage.
    • The applicant must be proficient in the use of CorelDraw software for creating and editing illustrations, graphics, and layout elements in the book design process.
    • Ability to accurately format and lay out text, ensuring proper font usage, line spacing, margins, and other typographic considerations.
    • The ability to design is an added advantage.
    • The applicant's ability to identify errors is an important skill needed for this position.
    • Ability to type the Yoruba language effectively.
    • Minimum of two years' cognate experience in typesetting with a publishing company or in a related company.
    • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language.
    • Must have good interpersonal skills.
    • He/she must be attentive to detail, including the ability to spot and correct typographical errors and formatting inconsistencies, and must have an understanding of graphic designs.
    • Qualified candidates must be proficient in the use of relevant computer software and must be competent with the use of tools for typesetting and layout work.
    • The ability to work efficiently, meet deadlines, and manage their time effectively to keep production schedules on track is important.
    • Familiarity with the book publishing process, from manuscript to printed book, is an added advantage, and this includes an understanding of prepress, printing, and binding.
    • Prior experience in a publishing firm, especially in a typesetting role, is an added advantage.
    • Familiarity with Adobe InDesign is also an added advantage.
