The Role
The RTG Operator plays a critical role in ensuring safe, efficient, and reliable yard operations within the terminal. Reporting to the Yard Supervisor, the role is responsible for operating Rubber Tyre Gantry (RTG) cranes to load, discharge, and reposition containers within the yard or directly onto and off terminal trucks. Containers handled may be laden or empty and vary in size from 20ft to 40ft.
This role requires a high level of focus, care, and operational discipline, as safety, precision, and coordination are essential in a fast‑paced terminal environment. The RTG Operator works closely with Planning, Technical, Safety, and Security teams to ensure smooth and compliant operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate RTG cranes safely and efficiently to load, discharge, and stack containers in accordance with operational plans
- Carry out pre‑shift equipment inspections to ensure all crane components are functioning correctly
- Identify, report, and escalate any equipment malfunctions, damage, or safety concerns before, during, or after operations
- Follow all standard operating procedures, safety guidelines, and terminal instructions at all times
- Ensure the safe handling of containers to prevent injury, cargo damage, or equipment loss
- Maintain productivity while upholding quality, safety, and operational standards
- Support general yard operations and perform related tasks as assigned by supervision
- Interact appropriately with internal teams and external stakeholders when required

What We’re Looking For
- Minimum education level of SSCE/WAEC or equivalent
- At least two years’ experience operating equipment in a terminal or related operational environment
- Prior experience as a Reach Stacker Operator or Empty Handler is considered a strong advantage
- Solid understanding of safe working practices and international terminal safety standards
- Basic knowledge of container terminal operations, including hazardous and special cargo handling
- Good hand‑eye coordination, spatial awareness, and depth perception
- Comfortable working at heights, with no acrophobia
- Basic oral and written English skills, with a working knowledge of Pidgin English
- Experience working in a multicultural or diverse environment is an added advantage
- Valid driving licence and a strong safety compliance record
