    Regulatory & Compliance Manager

    Accountabilities

    • Develop and implement effective regulatory strategies to ensure Sahara Power Group’s compliance with applicable laws, regulations, licenses, and codes.
    • Build and maintain strong relationships with regulators and key stakeholders including NERC, TCN, NISO, GACN, BPE, NGIC, NNPC, Gas Suppliers, Eligible Customers, Ministry of Power, NUPRC, NMDPRA, and other relevant government ministries and agencies.
    • Monitor and analyze regulatory, legislative, and policy developments in the electricity and gas markets, advising the MD/CEO and executive management on potential impacts and strategic responses.
    • Lead and coordinate the company’s participation in regulatory filings, licensing processes, public hearings, consultations, and tariff reviews to protect business interests.
    • Represent Sahara Power Group in industry associations such as the Association of Power Generation Companies (GenCos) and coordinate engagements with other GenCos, DisCos, NBET, and relevant market participants on regulatory and market operations matters.
    • Proactively identify and manage regulatory risks affecting Sahara Power Group’s operations and new business initiatives, recommending mitigation strategies to management.
    • Facilitate internal understanding of regulatory requirements across Sahara Power Opcos by supporting operational and commercial teams with interpretation of regulations and embedding compliance culture.
    • Collaborate with Commercial, Legal, Operations, and Project teams to ensure regulatory requirements are embedded in contract negotiations, project development, and operational execution.
    • Manage the company’s relationship with market operators including TCN and NISO to ensure operational compliance, grid code requirements, dispatch obligations, and effective grid interface for all power plants.
    • Maintain a database of licenses, permits, regulatory submissions, compliance deadlines, and ensure timely renewals and submissions.
    • Track and report to management on stakeholder engagement activities, regulatory submissions, compliance status, and key developments affecting Sahara Power Group’s interests.
    • Drive Sahara Power Group’s advocacy efforts on industry reforms, market rules, and policy initiatives to promote a viable and competitive power sector.
    • Support resolution of industry operational and regulatory misalignments such as market payments, grid constraints, gas allocation policies, and related issues impacting plant operations.
    • Any other duties that may be assigned to me by the Managing Director of Sahara Power Group.

    Requirements 

    • 10–15 years total professional experience. At least 5–7 years in a senior regulatory/compliance role within a regulated industry (e.g., power, oil & gas, telecoms, banking). Proven track record of engagement with regulators and government agencies. Experience leading compliance strategy and managing cross-functional teams.
    • Bachelor’s degree in Law, Engineering, Economics, Political Science, Public Policy, or related field. Master’s degree (MBA, LLM, or Energy Policy/Regulation)
    • Professional Certifications - Law/Regulation: BL (for lawyers in Nigeria) or LLM in Energy/Regulatory Law. Compliance: Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP or CCEP-I) International Compliance Association (ICA) Diploma in Governance, Risk & Compliance. Risk Management: Certified Risk Manager (CRM) or ISO 31000 Risk Management Certification. Sector-Specific: For Energy/Power, relevant certifications in Electricity Market Operations, Grid Code Compliance, or Gas Regulations.

    • Stakeholder engagement at senior government and industry levels.
    • Strategic advocacy and negotiation.
    • Strong report writing, presentation, and public hearing representation skills.
    • Ability to interpret and implement regulatory changes across business operations.
    • Crisis management for regulatory disputes.
