    Ophthalmic Technician

    Summary

    • An Ophthalmic Technician's main job is to support ophthalmologists by performing diagnostic tests like refractions and visual field tests, administering medications, and taking patient histories.
    • Key responsibilities include operating advanced equipment like OCTs and fundus cameras, managing EMRs, maintaining equipment, and educating patients on procedures and eye care.
    • Requirements often include a high school diploma, a certified ophthalmic technician program, strong communication and organizational skills, and experience in a clinical ophthalmology setting.

    Job Responsibilities
    Patient Care:

    • Obtain and document thorough patient medical and ocular histories.
    • Explain diagnostic procedures, treatment plans, and proper medication use to patients.
    • Provide patient comfort and support during examinations and procedures.

    Diagnostic Testing:

    • Perform visual acuity, refraction, and retinoscopy tests.
    • Operate and interpret results from advanced equipment like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT), Fundus Cameras, and Corneal Topography devices.
    • Conduct intraocular pressure (IOP) measurements using tonometry.

    Clinical Support:

    • Administer eye drops or other medications as directed.
    • Assist ophthalmologists during patient exams and minor procedures.
    • Manage patient flow to minimize wait times and ensure smooth clinic operations.

    Record Keeping & Equipment:

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date Electronic Medical Records (EMR).
    • Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
    • Assist with inventory management of medical supplies.

    Job Requirements
    Education & Certification:

    • A High School Diploma or equivalent is a minimum requirement.
    • Completion of a certified ophthalmic technician program is often required.
    • Certification as a Certified Ophthalmic Technician (COT) is a significant advantage.

    Skills:

    • Excellent communication and patient care skills.
    • Strong organizational and multitasking abilities.
    • Attention to detail and manual dexterity.
    • Proficiency with EMR systems and common ophthalmic diagnostic equipment.
    • Basic understanding of medical terminology specific to ophthalmology.

    Experience:

    • Experience in an ophthalmology or optometry setting is highly desirable.
