The Network Engineer will maintain a reliable, secure, and high-performing campus network that supports academic, administrative, research, and student services. The role requires hands-on experience with enterprise switching and routing, wireless networking, firewalls, network security, VLANs, authentication services, monitoring, Internet connectivity, and network troubleshooting. Reports to the Head of ICT / Network & Systems Administrator.
Key Responsibilities
Design, configure, administer, and maintain the University LAN, WLAN, and WAN infrastructure.
Configure and manage enterprise switches, routers, wireless controllers, access points, firewalls, and other network devices.
Implement and maintain VLANs, IP addressing, subnetting, DHCP, DNS, routing, network segmentation, and related services.
Administer and optimise enterprise wireless networking, authentication, access control, coverage, capacity, and client performance.
Manage Internet connectivity, ISP handoffs, routing, bandwidth utilisation, and failover arrangements.
Configure NAT, firewall policies, VPNs, routing, and security rules according to ICT policies.
Monitor network devices, links, services, performance, and security events using NMS and diagnostic tools.
Respond to incidents, troubleshoot complex wired, wireless, routing, firewall, and authentication issues, and perform root-cause analysis.
Support Active Directory, RADIUS/NPS, and secure network access policies for wired and wireless networks.
Participate in ICT infrastructure projects, deployments, maintenance activities, vendor coordination, and capacity planning.
Maintain network topology diagrams, configurations, IP records, VLAN records, SOPs, and technical documentation.
Provide advanced network support to the ICT Service Desk, university departments, junior ICT staff, and major university events.
Qualifications
Bachelor degree or HND in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Network Engineering, or a related discipline.
Relevant professional certifications will be an advantage.
At least three to five years of hands-on experience administering enterprise network infrastructure.
Requirements
Enterprise LAN/WAN administration experience.
Layer 2 and Layer 3 switching, VLANs, TCP/IP, subnetting, routing, DHCP, and DNS knowledge.
Enterprise wireless network, wireless controller, access point, WPA2/WPA3 Enterprise, RADIUS/NPS, and Active Directory integration experience.
Experience with ISP management, Internet failover, network performance optimisation, and network documentation.
Knowledge of structured cabling, fibre-optic networks, CCTV/IP infrastructure, network access control, cybersecurity, or cloud networking is an advantage.
Strong analytical, troubleshooting, documentation, communication, customer-service, and prioritisation skills.
Ability to work under pressure and respond to critical network incidents.
Commitment to security, reliability, service availability, and continuous learning.
Cisco CCNA/CCNP, Fortinet NSE/FCP, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Security+, MikroTik, Aruba, or Microsoft networking certifications are strongly considered.
