    Medical Trainer

    Overview of Position

    • Northeast Nigeria is facing a problem of weapons & explosive hazard contamination as a result of protracted conflict.
    • The presence of Explosive Remnants of War (ERW), Improvised Explosive Devices (IED) & landmines of an improvised nature, poses a serious threat to civilians as well as to UN & humanitarian personnel operating in the north east of the country.
    • Our client deployed to Nigeria in April 2017 to conduct an explosive threat scoping mission to Nigeria which resulted in the recommendation of the establishment of a humanitarian mine action coordination & support capacity in Maiduguri & immediate provision as appropriate, technical response to the explosive contamination impacting the humanitarian crisis in the north east. In addition, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) for division 7 of the Nigerian Army made a request through the Deputy Humanitarian Coordinator in December 2017, to have our clients presence in the north east.
    • The GOC highlighted the negative implications of the explosive threat including IED & Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) on IDP return, livelihoods & return to normalcy in northeast of Nigeria. In 2018 our client established a permanent presence to implement a mine action program in Nigeria to:
      • Improve the protection of civilians & facilitate humanitarian assistance.
      • Enhance national capacity to mitigate explosive threats & enable compliance with international treaty obligations.
      • Reduce the explosive threat to UN personnel & humanitarian workers.
    • Our clients Nigeria program takes a strategic, multi year comprehensive approach for protection of civilians & humanitarian actors through humanitarian mine action in north east Nigeria, supported by multi donor contributions.
    • This approach encompasses a range of responses, including Explosive Ordinance Risk Education EORE, Conflict Prevention and Preparedness (CPP), Improvised Explosive Device Disposal (IEDD) & emergency medical response training for the national military & police forces, information management & explosive hazard mapping & NTS, with coordination as key cross cutting enabling factors.
    • Under Japanese funding, our client is starting to implement a one year project aiming at protecting civilians & humanitarian actors in north east Nigeria from the threat of Explosive Ordnance (EO) & supporting the advancement of two outcomes:
      • National & local entities mitigate the explosive threat in north east Nigeria.
      • The immediate threat posed by EO to civilians & humanitarian and development actors is mitigated.

    Outputs & activities to achieve those outcomes will be:

    • Non Technical Survey (NTS), EORE, CPP & EOA to enhance safety & resilience of the at risk population.
    • Victim Assistance (VA) activities to enhance inclusive healthcare for the victims of EO incidents including persons with disabilities.
    • Support to the establishment of NMAC (National Mine Action Center) for sustainability & national ownership in humanitarian mine action.

    Specific outputs for the contracted staff will be:

    • Providing basic 1st aid training to 50 community members in Gwoza LGA, norther eastern Nigeria.

    Role Objectives

    • The Medical Training Specialists (2to be selected for this assignment) will have the responsibility of delivering the training to members of the community in Gwoza LGA
    • Support our client by delivering basic 1st aid training to 50 participants, being 25 male & 25 female, to members of selected communities in Gwoza LGA in the framework of a pilot project for Community Protection & Prepardness (CPP).

    Expected output:

    • 50 people residents of Gwoza LGA (25 female & 25 male) are trained in basic 1st aid.

    Project reporting:

    • Draft a training management package on basic 1st aid training.
    • Provide training report at the end of the training.

    Requirements / Key Competencies

    • Master's Degree or equivalent in Medicine or Public Health or Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in a related field with an additional 2 years of relevant experience.
    • Experience as Instructor in medical training related to Emergency Trauma Bag (ETB) or individual 1st aid kit or basic & advanced 1st aid is mandatory (CV details must reflect experience & references must be provided).
    • Must hold a recognized civilian paramedic / military medic qualification; (or above). Copy must be submitted as annex to CV.
    • Experience in training in BAY states is desired.
    • Medical experience with international or national organization in Nigeria is highly desirable.
    • Recent (within the last 2 years) experience of an operational medical deployment is desirable.
    • Experience in working in the humanitarian context of BAY States is desired.
    • Fluency in written & spoken English proven either by being a native speaker or through certifications, employment records or references is required.
    • Languages: Fluent in English (essential).

    Team management     

    • The person will work in collaboration with another Medical Trainer.
    • The Medical Trainer preferably has experience in working in remote locations in BAY states.
