Junior Data Engineer – PostgreSQL / PostGIS at eHealth4everyone

About the Role

We are looking for a Junior Data Engineer with foundational knowledge of PostgreSQL, PL/pgSQL and PostGIS to support data management, data processing and the development of data pipelines for a health information platform.

The ideal candidate should have a basic understanding of relational databases and some practical experience working with PostgreSQL. Experience with PostGIS, PL/pgSQL and Power BI is highly desirable, but candidates with foundational knowledge and demonstrated interest in these areas are encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will work with experienced data and software engineers to build, maintain and improve data pipelines and support the preparation of reliable datasets for reporting and visualisation.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the development and maintenance of data pipelines.
• Work with PostgreSQL databases to store, query and manage data.
• Write and maintain SQL queries for data extraction and transformation.
• Develop basic PL/pgSQL functions, procedures and database logic under guidance.
• Support the management and processing of geospatial data using PostGIS.
• Assist with data transformation, validation and quality checks.
• Prepare and transform datasets for reporting and visualisation.
• Support the development of data pipelines that feed Power BI dashboards and reports.
• Assist with troubleshooting data pipeline and database issues.
• Document data processes, queries and pipeline configurations.
• Work with software and data engineers to integrate data from different sources.
• Support data quality, consistency and integrity across systems.
• Participate in testing and optimisation of database queries and data processes.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Basic to intermediate knowledge of SQL.
• Practical knowledge of PostgreSQL.
• Basic understanding of relational database concepts and data modelling.
• Some exposure to PL/pgSQL.
• Basic understanding of data pipelines and ETL/ELT processes.
• Familiarity with data cleaning and validation.
• Basic understanding of APIs and data integration.
• Familiarity with Git/version control.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Willingness to learn new data technologies and work with an existing data platform.

Desirable

• Experience with PostGIS and spatial/geographic data.
• Experience writing PL/pgSQL functions, procedures or triggers.
• Experience building data pipelines for Power BI.
• Familiarity with Power BI or other business intelligence tools.
• Experience with Python for data processing or automation.
• Exposure to Apache Airflow, Azure Data Factory, Apache NiFi or similar pipeline/orchestration tools.
• Experience working with APIs, JSON or other structured data sources.
• Experience working with health, research or other large datasets.

Experience

• 0–3 years of relevant experience is acceptable. Candidates with relevant academic projects, internships, personal projects or practical database/data engineering experience are encouraged to apply.
• Candidates should have some hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, even if they are still developing their skills in PL/pgSQL, PostGIS and data pipeline development.
• What matters most: a strong foundation in SQL/PostgreSQL, some exposure to the required technologies and the ability to learn quickly while working alongside experienced data engineers.
