    Internal Medicine Physician

    PURPOSE OF THE ROLE

    • The internal Medicine Physician who reports to the Head of Medicine is responsible for the management of general medical patients and specifically for cardiovascular patients.
    • The incumbent will be responsible for diagnosing, treating, and preventing heart and/or cardiovascular conditions through non-invasive procedures or, when necessary, surgical intervention.

    KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS

    • Evaluating and managing cardiac and its’ associated disorders.
    • Referring patients to surgeons as appropriate
    • Evaluating and managing general medical cases.
    • Recommending and administering other services as required
    • Run clinics, manage emergency and admit patients
    • Perform procedures like echocardiograms, stress test, holter tests etc
    • Able to organise and coordinate the function of the cardiac suite while also assisting in the running of the cardiac catheterization laboratory
    • Able to appropriately prescribe the best modality of intervention as required
    • Advise and assist with interventional cardiology and cardiac surgeries when needed
    • Monitor patient progress pre and post-procedure
    • Understudy with the interventional cardiologist with the goal of becoming proficient in these procedures
    • Liaise with medical professionals in the community and hospitals
    • Consultations as scheduled
    • Participate in regular ward round in the hospital and attend mandatory meeting
    • Patients must be properly and clearly counseled before carrying out any procedure. This includes both out-patient and in-patient procedures.
    • All procedures must be consented and same verified by the consultant before commencement.
    • Pursue ongoing and continuing education to stay on top of the latest research findings
    • Managing consultants are ultimately responsible for patient care. The buck stops with you.
    • If instructions are left for a Medical Officer to carry out or an investigation to be done, follow up to ensure it has been done and find out the outcome on the patient afterwards.
    • Follow up with and cross check accuracy of requested investigation from laboratory and radiology investigations
    • Write a report when asking a consultant from a different specialty within to review/ co-manage patients. However a referred patient is still your patient.

    • Be responsible for medical report/ referral notes as the primary managing consultant.
    • Responsible for personal career development and keeping abreast with the latest knowledge and research in their field.
    • Keep your medical practicing licenses current and your file updated with the HR office annually
    • Understand and adhere to the reporting/escalation lines. Head of Department →Medical Director
    • Complete all performance appraisals with supervisors/ line managers/ Heads of department.
    • Pursue personal research and publishing of your own work within ethical bounds. A target of at least 2 annual publications is desirable
    • Perform any other assigned duties.

    This role reports to the Head of Medicine.

    EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

    • Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) registered with MDCN with a valid practicing license.
    • Fellow of National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria or the West African College of physician or its equivalent with sub specialization in cardiology
    • Years practicing as a Cardiologist
    • Extensive knowledge of modern cardiology practices and technology
    • Extreme attention to detail.
    • Caring and compassionate bedside manner
    • Excellent written and verbal communication skills Organizational and time management skills.
    • Excellent decision-making skills and communication.
    • Outstanding practical and diagnostic skills.
    • Great team work spirit, management and leadership skills.

    PROFILE REQUIREMENTS

    • Proficiency with the use of the computer.
    • Healthcare Management Systems and Microsoft Office Suite
    • Outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Excellent organizational and multi-tasking skills
    • Leadership ability.
    • Innovative ideas to move the practice forward.
    • Great interpersonal skills, and ability to communicate compassionately
    • Highly motivated team player willing to go the extra mile
