The Role

• The Hospital Porter reports to the Matron, and is charged with running professional, efficient and friendly portering services, moving patients and medical equipment between different departments of the hospital, including emergencies.
• The incumbent provides assistance to nurses in lifting a patient onto a trolley, wheelchair and medical beds.
• The activities of the porter shall include but is not limited to; supporting the clinical team to deliver high standard of care to our patients, transportation of patients and supplies within the hospital, carrying heavy hardware gadgets, luggage, furniture, and surgical equipment.

Responsibilities

• Transport patients who undergo surgeries or are very ill safely around their wards and other areas of the hospital
• Assist nurses with lifting patients on to trolleys, beds or wheelchairs
• Ensuring the safe placement of supplies such as gas, oxygen cylinders and surgical equipment.
• Using good handling techniques to move heavy clinical waste, parcels, furniture and other paraphernalia within the hospital.
• Assist physiotherapy patients with ambulation and lifting of patients.
• Assist with patient luggage and opening of entryways when required.
• Work with the surgical team to position and transfer patients in and out of the theatre.
• Run general office errands when necessary
• Assist the Maintenance team with lifting of heavy equipment
• Attend appropriate training sessions set by the hospital to improve standard of practice.
• Report to the matron or appropriate nurse regarding any patient related information.
• Adhere to all hospital policies, procedures and standards.
• Provide vital services with relevance to clinical procedures within the hospital.
• Perform other duties as required.

Qualifications

• SSCE or equivalent with a minimum of credit in English language.
• 0-1 year work experience.
• Proven experience as a porter
• Physically fit for lifting, pushing, etc
• Good communication and interpersonal skills
