Head Operations at Yobe Mining Development Company Ltd

Overview:

Yobe Mining Development Company Limited (YMDCL), the state-owned vehicle for solid minerals development, is seeking a proactive and experienced Head of Operations to lead and coordinate its exploration and exploitation programs. The ideal candidate is a results-driven professional with solid technical knowledge of the mining value chain and proven ability to establish new operational structures under challenging conditions.

Key Responsibilities:

• Oversee all field operations including mineral exploration, site development, and exploitation activities.
• Develop operational strategies and ensure efficient execution of exploration, drilling, sampling, and resource evaluation.
• Manage technical teams and contractors involved in geological, geotechnical, and mining activities.
• Supervise operational logistics, site safety compliance, and resource mobilization.
• Prepare periodic technical and operational reports for the Managing Director and Board.
• Support new project setups including early-stage scoping, feasibility, permitting, and infrastructure planning.
• Coordinate with regulatory agencies, consultants, and host communities to ensure smooth field operations.
• Maintain high standards of environmental and safety practices in line with Nigerian Mining laws and global best practices.
• Contribute to business development strategies by identifying operational risks and opportunities.
• Any other work to be assigned by the organization.

Qualifications and Experience:

• A degree in Geology, Mining Engineering, Mineral Exploration, or related field (advanced degrees are an added advantage).
• At least 7 years of relevant experience in mining operations with strong emphasis on exploration and early-stage project development.
• Proven track record of managing field teams and coordinating multiple operational activities.
• Experience in setting up new operations, especially in remote or challenging environments.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage tight timelines without compromising quality and safety.
• Strong knowledge of Nigerian mining laws, community relations, and ESG principles.

SKILLS

• Field Investigation & Mapping – Skilled in geological fieldwork, rock/soil sampling, core logging, and structural mapping.
• Analytical & Laboratory Techniques – Ability to conduct mineralogical, geochemical, and petrological analyses using modern lab tools.
• GIS & Remote Sensing – Competence in using GIS, GPS, and satellite imagery for geological interpretation and resource mapping.
• Data Interpretation & Reporting – Strong analytical skills for interpreting geological data, preparing technical reports, and presenting findings.
• Exploration & Resource Evaluation – Knowledge of exploration methods, reserve estimation, and classification systems (e.g., JORC, NI 43-101).
• Mining & Mineral Processing Insight – Understanding of mining operations, beneficiation, and mineral economics.
• Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking – Ability to assess complex geological problems and propose practical solutions.
• Health, Safety & Environmental Awareness – Adherence to HSE standards during fieldwork and operations.
• Communication & Teamwork – Clear reporting, presentations, and effective collaboration with engineers, miners, and stakeholders.
• Adaptability & Endurance – Resilience to work in challenging environments (remote sites, extreme weather, rugged terrain).
