About COSNG Farm
COSNG Farm is an agricultural business specializing in poultry farming, egg production, and feed milling for its flock. We are seeking an experienced, dependable Feed Mill Supervisor to manage daily production, supervise staff, and ensure accurate feed compounding and stock accountability.
About the Role
Our feed mill has a production capacity of approximately four tonnes per hour. The Feed Mill Supervisor will oversee the Assistant Feed Mill Supervisor and feed mill attendants and work directly with the Quality Control Supervisor.
The successful candidate must have practical feed mill experience, follow approved formulas strictly, maintain accurate daily records, and account for ingredients and finished feed.
Key Responsibilities
Production planning and staff supervision
- Prepare daily production and batching plans based on approved formulas and the farm’s feed requirements.
- Assign and supervise duties for the Assistant Feed Mill Supervisor and feed mill attendants.
- Confirm that all ingredients, including micronutrients and additives, are available and accurately weighed before production begins.
- Use the correct batch quantities for each mixer’s capacity.
- Keep different feed types clearly identified during production, bagging, storage, and dispatch.
- Train staff, maintain discipline, and ensure proper handovers.
Strict compliance with approved formulas
- Ensure every ingredient is included at the approved quantity.
- Never omit, substitute, or change ingredients without prior management authorization.
- Stop production and report shortages, weighing errors, incorrect ingredients, or uncertainty about a formula.
- Ensure small ingredients and additives are accurately weighed and premixed according to approved procedures.
- Work directly with the Quality Control Supervisor on production checks and batch sign-offs.
- Unauthorized ingredient omission, substitution, deliberate formula changes, or falsification of records may lead to disciplinary action, including termination of employment.
Weighing, crushing, mixing, and bagging
- Check scales before production and report inaccurate or faulty equipment.
- Supervise crushers, conveyors, mixers, and bagging equipment.
- Follow approved loading sequences and mixing times.
- Measure and record crushing losses, spillage, and material retained in equipment.
- Apply only approved loss allowances; do not independently adjust formulas.
- Ensure finished bags contain the correct net weight, including accurate 25 kg packs.
- Carry out routine bag-weight checks and correct discrepancies before dispatch.
- Reconcile ingredient inputs against finished feed, remaining material, and recorded losses.
Ingredient receiving and stock control
- Verify the identity, condition, and weight of ingredients received.
- Work with the Quality Control Supervisor to identify wet, mouldy, contaminated, adulterated, or unsuitable materials.
- Hold questionable deliveries aside pending approval.
- Maintain accurate opening stock, receipts, usage, and closing stock records.
- Complete daily stock reconciliation and report unexplained differences immediately.
- Store ingredients safely, with clear labels, moisture protection, and proper stock rotation.
- Prevent unauthorized removal, use, or wastage of ingredients and finished feed.
Ingredient procurement support
- Visit suppliers, markets, warehouses, and other procurement locations when assigned.
- Check ingredient quality, quantities, weights, and loading arrangements before transport to the farm.
- Report shortages, quality concerns, and delivery discrepancies promptly.
- Keep accurate receipts and procurement records.
- Make purchases or accept substitutions only within management’s authorization.
Daily reporting and record keeping
- Complete production, ingredient-use, stock, bagging, and dispatch records each day.
- Submit daily reports through the farm’s designated reporting channel.
- Include feed types and quantities produced, ingredients received and used, closing stock, bags produced and dispatched, weight checks, losses, and discrepancies.
- Report equipment faults, downtime, maintenance needs, staff attendance, and ingredients needed for the next production day.
- Escalate serious problems immediately rather than waiting for the daily report.
Equipment care and safety
- Complete pre-start checks and ensure equipment is clean and ready for use.
- Coordinate routine maintenance with the farm’s maintenance team.
- Report abnormal noise, overheating, damaged components, electrical faults, and breakdown risks.
- Ensure machinery is safely stopped and isolated before cleaning, clearing blockages, or repairs.
- Keep production and storage areas clean and organized.
- Ensure staff follow safety procedures and use appropriate protective equipment.
Work Schedule and Weekly Time Off
This is a farm-resident position. Weekly time off normally begins on Saturday evening, after sufficient feed has been compounded to cover the birds’ Sunday requirements and all daily records, stock reconciliation, and handovers are completed.
The supervisor may then leave the farm and must return on Monday morning to resume duties. Any earlier departure must be approved by management, with sufficient feed prepared and appropriate supervision arranged before leaving.
Required Experience and Skills
- Hands-on experience in poultry or livestock feed milling, preferably in a supervisory role.
- Practical knowledge of crushers, conveyors, mixers, weighing scales, and bagging equipment.
- Ability to calculate batch quantities, weigh ingredients accurately, and reconcile stock.
- Ability to maintain clear records and use a smartphone for daily reporting.
- Proven ability to supervise assistants and attendants.
- Willingness to visit ingredient procurement locations when required.
- Willingness to reside on the farm.
- Relevant training in agriculture, animal production, feed technology, engineering, or a related field is an advantage. Practical competence is essential.
Personal Qualities
- Honest, dependable, and attentive to detail.
- Able to follow approved formulas and procedures consistently.
- Willing to report mistakes and stop incorrect production immediately.
- Accountable for ingredients, finished feed, and stock movements.
- Respectful and effective when supervising staff.
- Able to work closely with quality control and management.
Accommodation, Salary, and Growth
- A self-contained room is provided on the farm.
- Salary will be discussed based on experience and practical ability.
- Opportunities for increased income and responsibility are available based on performance, competence, and reliability.
Selection Process
Shortlisted candidates will complete a practical assessment covering batching calculations, ingredient identification, weighing, stock reconciliation, and feed mill supervision. References from previous employers will be required.
