    Emergency Physician

    THE ROLE
    The Emergency Physician will assume the role of the Senior Doctor-in-Charge, having overall clinical responsibility for all patients within the ED until the patient is admitted to the ward, discharged, or until a clinical transfer is completed to other specialties or facilities

    He/she will providing leadership guidance in the department, and establish good working relationship with other departments

    He/she will  ensure that triage processes in the Emergency Department are safe and fit for purpose

    He/she will support other doctors and other medical personnel in their clinical activities in the Emergency Department, and provide the necessary back up and relief when it is necessary to do so to maintain patient safety.

    He/she will be required to act immediately on any missed diagnosis or inaccuracies to ensure the patient receive the best treatment.
    He/she will provide necessary training, policies, and protocols while uploading preexisting relevant ones.

    Other duties as may be assigned at the reasonable discretion of the Hospital

    RESPONSIBILITIES

    Clinical Duties:

    The clinical duties will include but not limited to the following:

    • To carry out immediate evaluation and management of emergency patients who are brought in for treatment.
    • To provide timely decision making on patients
    • To respond to all forms of cardiac/cardiopulmonary arrest at the time of immediate need, both on the premises of the Emergency Department and the rest of the Hospital.
    • To perform and interpret essential diagnostic tests including the electrocardiogram, blood gases, urinalysis and other relevant tests and arrange for validated reporting from the appropriate department.
    • To appropriately make use of other available personnel whether clinical or not, to provide immediate stabilization and treatment of patients in a situation where there are multiple emergency cases
    • To obtain the necessary history, physical examination and assessment on every patient, promptly and appropriately, and prepare treatment plans.
    • To review all laboratory reports (including x-ray and other imaging) every day and inform ordering physician of necessary actions taken.
    • To ensure that the Emergency Medicine team are resourced and trained in Rapid Sequence Intubation and other trainings as needed.
    • To respond to Emergency calls from other areas of the hospital where a patient may require immediate acute care
    • To ensure that patient discharge is safe and appropriate and that any follow up care is provided and communicated to the patient
    • To ensure that appropriate patients are admitted to the unit as per the operational policy

    Data Management

    • To make sure that all medical records are legible, properly kept and maintained.
    • To provide instructions for discharge and supply all relevant paperwork
    • To ensure that clinical information that accompany transferred patients are legible, detailed and representative of the patient’s clinical state.
    • To maintain records to demonstrate own clinical output (e.g. patient numbers and clinical cases managed) that feeds into a yearly appraisal
    • To give regular reports as required on emergency unit performance and other matters arising

    Management and Clinical Governance

    • He/she will be required to work simultaneously with staff from the emergency department and complaint facility to ensure a rapid resolution of complaints.
    • He/she will be required to work collaboratively with other emergency room staff to ensure the appropriate utilization of hospital guidelines.
    • He/she will be required to act as a mediator between the department and the hospital management
    • He/she will be required to observe and share best practice, agreed policies, procedures and principles of Clinical Governance.
    • He/she will be required to comply with all relevant policies, procedures and training on infection prevention and control.
    • He/she will be required to maintain good relationships with local GP’s and other necessary professions and specialists by providing good discharge information.
    • He/she will be required to ensure that the Emergency Department Premises are safe and fit for purpose
    • He/she will be required to escalate risks about the premises as soon as feasible
    • He/she will be required to assist the Hospital Board in formulating changes to the environment based on clinical safety needs
    • He/she will be required to ensure that the Risk Register is kept up-to-date and escalated as appropriately

    Educational Responsibilities and CPD

    • He/she will be required to participate in the identification, development and delivery of education, training and personal/professional development for nursing and support staff.
    • He/she will be required to organise and teach at departmental teaching session for Doctors and Nurses within the department (and in other areas of the hospital or for corporate purposes as required).
    • Protecting Patients/ Confidentiality and Disclosure of Information
    • Confidentiality must be maintained at all times
    • Press enquiries must be referred to the relevant department of the hospital.
    • Advice must be sought from relevant supervisors to clarify gray areas.
    • Health and Safety
    • To take the steps necessary to ensure that the health of the patients, emergency team is not put at undue risk
    • To ensure that PPE use amongst all ED staff is adhered to as much as feasible

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Medicine (MBBS) registered with MDCN with a valid practicing license.
    • Fellowship of any of the relevant colleges with emergency medicine sub-specialization e.g., FWACP, FMCP or equivalent qualifications
    • 2 – 4 years’ experience as an emergency specialist with at least six months in Emergency room
    • An up-to-date license to practice medicine.
    • Self-driven with a solution-orientated approach
    • Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), advanced trauma life support (ATLS) and advance pediatric life support training or equivalent
    • In-depth knowledge of current medical treatments and procedures.
    • Great attention to detail with excellent analytical skills.
    • Excellent communication and interpersonal abilities.
    • Ability to think and act quickly in a stressful environment.

     SPECIAL CONDITIONS

    • Employment is contingent on passing a medical screening conducted by the hospital
    • The employee will be subject to various testing including but not limited to drug and medical testing throughout the tenure of their employment
    • Knowledge of workflow processes.
