Job Summary
The Electrical Maintenance Engineer - Power Plant (Generator) is primarily responsible for the electrical integrity, control systems reliability, synchronization performance, and power quality of the company’s diesel generator fleet (40kVA – 750kVA).
This role focuses on electrical diagnostics, panel systems, load management, protection systems, and generator output stability to ensure maximum uptime across all deployed rental units. The Engineer will lead electrical troubleshooting, oversee control panel configuration, and ensure all generators meet voltage, frequency, and synchronization standards before deployment and during active service.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical Maintenance & Preventive Planning
- Develop and execute preventive electrical maintenance schedules for diesel generators (40kVA – 750kVA).
- Inspect and maintain alternators, excitation systems, AVR units, wiring harnesses, circuit breakers, and protection devices.
- Conduct insulation resistance testing, continuity testing, and electrical integrity checks.
- Perform detailed control panel inspections and ensure proper calibration of meters, sensors, and relays.
- Maintain complete electrical service documentation for each asset.
Synchronization & Load Management
- Demonstrate strong knowledge and hands-on experience with synchronization panels and load sharing systems.
- Configure and troubleshoot synchronization systems for multi-generator operations.
- Diagnose and resolve phase sequence issues, frequency mismatch, voltage imbalance, and load instability.
- Ensure proper load transfer between generators and ATS systems without disruption.
- Monitor power factor, load distribution, and electrical performance during operation.
Advanced Electrical Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Lead general electrical troubleshooting relating to diesel generators and associated control systems.
- Diagnose and repair faults in alternators, AVR systems, AMF panels, ATS systems, control boards, sensors, and wiring systems.
- Identify and rectify electrical protection trips including overcurrent, earth fault, reverse power, and under/over voltage conditions.
- Conduct root cause analysis on repeated electrical failures and implement long-term corrective solutions.
- Respond promptly to critical electrical breakdowns at client sites.
Installation, Commissioning & Electrical Compliance
- Supervise electrical installation and commissioning of generators at client sites.
- Ensure proper cable sizing, terminations, glandings, and earthing systems.
- Oversee installation and configuration of ATS, AMF, and synchronization panels.
- Confirm voltage regulation, frequency stability, and load acceptance before handover.
- Ensure all installations comply with Nigerian electrical regulations and safety standards.
Fleet Electrical Performance & Quality Control
- Monitor deployed generators for electrical performance, output stability, and system reliability.
- Inspect returned units and assess electrical condition prior to redeployment.
- Recommend upgrades or modifications to improve electrical reliability and protection.
- Support lifecycle planning from an electrical systems perspective.
Technical Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare structured electrical fault reports and performance analysis.
- Maintain detailed records of panel configurations, synchronization settings, and protection parameters.
- Track recurring electrical issues and recommend strategic improvements.
- Ensure compliance with company Electrical Maintenance SOPs.
Supervision & Technical Leadership
- Supervise junior technicians handling electrical repairs and panel works.
- Provide technical guidance on synchronization setup, panel configuration, and fault diagnosis.
- Train junior staff on structured electrical troubleshooting procedures and safe electrical practices.
Technical Expertise Required
- Extensive hands-on experience with diesel generator electrical systems (40kVA – 750kVA).
- Strong practical knowledge of synchronization panels, load sharing modules, ATS, and AMF systems.
- In-depth understanding of alternators, excitation systems, AVR operation, and protection relays.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts.
- Experience with testing tools such as multimeters, insulation testers, clamp meters, and diagnostic software.
- Strong understanding of grounding systems, cable sizing, and power distribution principles.
Educational & Professional Requirements
- HND in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Minimum of 7–10 years proven hands-on experience focused primarily on electrical generator systems.
- Professional certification in power systems or generator control systems is an advantage.
- Membership of COREN or NSE is an added advantage.
