    Economic & Commercial Assistant

    Summary:

    The U.S. Embassy Abuja, Nigeria is seeking eligible and qualified applicants for the position of Economic & Commercial Assistant in the Economic Office.

    Duties

    The Economic and Commercial Assistant maintains contacts with officials, business leaders, and experts who are influential stakeholders in the Nigeria market in support of the Mission’s commercial diplomacy. The jobholder prepares analysis and other written products for the U.S. Mission to advance commercial diplomacy in Nigeria.

    Cultivates, develops, and maintains contacts throughout Nigeria’s government, private sector, academia, and others who are stakeholders in the business environment and investment climate. The position will support official U.S. delegations to Nigeria. Support the Economic Section’s engagement with these contacts in coordination with colleagues at Consulate General Lagos. 

    By engaging contacts, attending trade events and government conferences, and other means of research, prepare analysis on Nigeria’s economic policies and conditions as directed with a particular focus on priority areas in the Integrated Country Strategy and elements most important to U.S. commercial interests. 

    Beyond analysis, gain insights and market intelligence to inform the Mission’s efforts to find or create business deal opportunities for American companies in Nigeria, including but not limited to major tenders, projects, or procurements. 

    Education Requirements:

    • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, economics, political science, public administration, or law is required. (NYSC Certificate or Exemption is required)

    ​​​​Experience:

    • Minimum of three (3) years of experience in government, business, academia or management working on business analysis or consulting, technology, industry, or related field is required.

    Language: 

    • Fluent in speaking/reading/writing in English is required. 

    Job Knowledge:

    • Must have detailed knowledge of business and of Nigeria’s political economy.

    Skills And Abilities:

    Ability to engage with a wide variety (mid to high-level) of contacts in government; ability to write concise, analytical, well organized, grammatically correct, effective, and persuasive English in a limited amount of time; and ability to work effectively as a team player is required. Must be able to interact professionally with Embassy employees at all levels. Incumbent must be able to perform market analysis and relate economic developments to political and social forces. Ability to obtain material from varied sources and draft cables and reports of a factual nature in precise and accurate form is required. Excellent speaking skills and ability to use Microsoft Software Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) is required. Basic keyboarding skills is required. Must have good numerical skills to perform economic analysis.
