    Consultant Radiologist

    Line Supervisor: General Manager/CEO and Clinical Head of radiology

    Role Summary: Radiologists are physicians who specialize in capturing and analyzing medical images. They use their findings to diagnose illnesses and, in some cases, treat patients using medical radiation or surgical intervention. Our Radiologists normally receive patients from physician referrals from within and outside our partnering hospitals. Their first duty with patients is to diagnose their illness or disease using a variety of high-tech tools at their disposal.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Maintain a high standard in discharge of duties within Radiology Services Unit
    • To provide a quality service for patients by ensuring that every patient is treated as an individual in terms of courtesy, kindness, efficiency, efficacy and confidentiality.
    • Being caring and compassionate to patients
    • Communicate with the patient in a manner appropriate to the patient’s ability to understand.
    • Offer support and care to patients undergoing treatment
    • Demonstrated proficiency with computer skills and software programs used for documentation activities and report generation.
    • To take part in on-call service as required.
    • Evaluating patients’ medical histories to ensure the right radiology protocols are deployed
    • Suggesting alternative medical imaging techniques, when necessary.
    • Informing patients about the medical imaging process.
    • Effective Understanding and Use of an array of Radiology Modalities
    • Performing some basic image-guided, diagnostic procedures.
    • Interpreting the results from diagnostic imaging procedures to determine diagnoses.
    • Communicating and discussing results and diagnoses with physicians.
    • Compiling written reports of results and diagnoses.
    • Following medical protocols for resuscitation, bleeding, infection, or other emergency situations, when necessary.
    • Review patient medical history and supporting clinical information.
    • Ensure that the examination order is complete, contains relevant information, and meets the standard of “medical necessity.”
    • Evaluate any contraindications, insufficient patient preparation, and the patient’s inability or unwillingness to tolerate the examination and associated procedures.
    • Apply independent, professional, ethical judgment, and critical thinking to safely perform diagnostic radiology procedures.
    • Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional.
    • Identify and document any limitations to the radiology examination performed where necessary.
    • Review examination images, synthesize examination results and prepare the preliminary findings.
    • Except as authorized by written facility policies and procedures, refer specific diagnostic, treatment or prognosis questions to the appropriate physician or healthcare professional.
    • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality in accordance with privacy laws and facility policies, and procedures.
    • Adhere to accepted professional and ethical standards.
    • Performing or directing radiology staff to carry out image-guided, diagnostic procedures.
    • Working with radiographers to perfect image quality.
    • Interpreting the results from diagnostic imaging procedures to determine diagnoses.
    • Document any incidental findings that might impact patient safety or patient care and provide that information to the interpreting physician.
    • Operate the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and Radiology Information System RIS proficiently
    • Ensure that the Radiology examination results meet the facility standards for Quality Assurance before findings are released for interpretation.
    • Establish and maintain collaborative working relationships with co-workers, administrators, and members of the health care team.
    • Foster a collaborative atmosphere with other members of the healthcare team.
    • To be aware of own limitations in terms of expertise and experience and not to be afraid to ask for assistance or advice from more senior staff.
    • Demonstrated commitment to professional growth and lifelong learning (e.g., continuing medical education in the specialty area(s) performed, higher education, research, staff training, etc.).
    • To ensure that the three principles of radiation protection, namely justification, optimization (ALARA) and dose constraints/limits are adhered to.
    • To be familiar with Medical and Dental Council, HFEEMA directive Basic safety standards for the protection of health workers and the general public against the dangers arising from Ionizing Radiation
    • To be familiar with, and abide by, all Health and Safety Rules and recommendations.
    • To maintain good working relationships with colleagues and with non-radiographic staff, both in the Radiology Department and elsewhere in the hospital.
    • Other duties assigned that are appropriate to the post.

    Other Responsibilities

    • Assist with the daily operation of the radiology facility.
    • Exercise supervisory responsibility for the maintenance and accuracy of facility reports, database records and logs.
    • Carry out Quality Assurance protocols and Quality Improvement measures within the facility.
    • Recommend necessary upgrade

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery
    • Evidence of completion of 4 to 7 years’ internship and residency training, specializing in radiology.
    • Certification by the National Postgraduate Medical College or West African College of Surgeons in radiology and/or a subspecialty, such as nuclear medicine, therapeutic radiology, or interventional radiology.
    • Valid and active medical license in Nigeria.
    • Proficient in general radiology techniques, including X-ray, MRI, and ultrasound.
    • Desirable to have related experience in hospital and diagnostic center environment.
