    Primary School Social - Emotional Counsellor

    Role Overview

    • The Social-Emotional Counsellor at Charterhouse Lagos plays a vital role in promoting the social-emotional well-being of students and fostering a positive and inclusive school environment.
    • This position requires a compassionate and skilled counsellor who can provide individual and group counselling, implement social-emotional learning programs, and collaborate with stakeholders to support students’ mental health and social development.
    • The Social-Emotional Counsellor will empower students to navigate challenges, develop resilience, and thrive academically and emotionally.

    Responsibilities:

    Counselling and Support:

    • Provide individual and group counselling services to students, addressing a range of social-emotional concerns such as self-esteem, stress, anxiety, friendship issues, and family dynamics.
    • Develop rapport and trust with students, creating a safe and confidential space where they can express their thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
    • Implement evidence-based counselling techniques and interventions to support students’ emotional well-being and facilitate their personal growth.

    Social-Emotional Learning:

    • Collaborate with teachers and school leaders to implement social-emotional learning programs and initiatives that promote emotional intelligence, self-awareness, empathy, and responsible decision-making.
    • Conduct classroom lessons and workshops on topics such as emotional regulation, conflict resolution, problem-solving, and building healthy relationships.
    • Assist in the development of age-appropriate resources and activities to support social-emotional learning across the curriculum.

    Crisis Intervention:

    • Respond promptly to crisis situations, providing immediate support and intervention to students experiencing emotional distress, trauma, or other critical incidents.
    • Coordinate with school leaders and external agencies to ensure appropriate resources and referrals for students and families in crisis.
    • Implement crisis management protocols and contribute to the development of a safe and supportive school environment.

    Collaboration and Consultation:

    • Collaborate with teachers, school leaders, and parents to identify and address students’ social-emotional needs and develop effective intervention strategies.
    • Provide consultation and guidance to teachers regarding classroom management techniques, student behaviour, and differentiated instruction to support students’ social-emotional development.
    • Collaborate with external mental health professionals and community organizations to access additional resources and support for students and families.

    Documentation and Record-Keeping:

    • Maintain accurate and confidential records of counselling sessions, assessments, and interventions according to professional standards and school policies.
    • Prepare reports and communicate regularly with relevant stakeholders, including parents, teachers, and school leaders, to ensure a holistic and coordinated approach to student support.

    Professional Development:

    • Engage in ongoing professional development to stay updated on best practices in counselling, social-emotional learning, and mental health support for children.
    • Seek opportunities for personal growth and professional advancement through workshops, conferences, and professional networks.
    • Stay informed about relevant research and trends in child and adolescent psychology and counselling.

    Qualifications:

    • Master’s degree in Counselling, Psychology, or a related field. A counselling license or certification is preferred.
    • Proven experience in providing counselling services to children and adolescents, preferably in an educational setting.
    • Knowledge of social-emotional learning principles, theories, and evidence-based practices.
    • Strong counselling skills, including active listening, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with students.
    • Knowledge of various counselling techniques and interventions suitable for children and adolescents.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills.
    • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive issues with tact and professionalism.
    • Familiarity with ethical guidelines and legal requirements related to counselling and student privacy.
    • Understanding of child development, trauma-informed practices, and mental health issues affecting students.
    • Collaborative and team-oriented approach, with the ability to work effectively with diverse stakeholders.
