What is Absenteeism Policy

Absenteeism Policy is a set of rules, guidelines and procedures that help to regulate the number of times employees can be absent from work. It is done basically to address the issue of employee attendance in the workspace. The policy always includes reasons employees can be absent from work like illness, injury or a scheduled time off. Consequently, the policy makes room for a form of disciplinary measure for employees who exceed the number of days provided for such cases. 

The constant absence of an employee in his place of work affects the efficiency and quality of work done. To that, an effective absenteeism policy always has a financial benefit to the organization. That way, the organization gets something in return for the lack of work being done by the employee when he is absent. 

Most organisations however can utilize their Paid Time Off (PTO) to reduce the level of absenteeism among employees. A paid time off is an agreed number of days in a year that an employee can miss work and still be paid his full wages. The scenarios covered with this are usually annual leaves, sick leaves, vacations, or even maternity leaves. In this case, even though an employee misses work, he will be fully compensated without any penalties. 

A considerate PTO can greatly reduce the absence of workers in the office. With it, employers are careful not to miss work constantly because they are aware that they have a limited number of days off.

  • Make it clear and easy to understand. Once it’s clear, employees are not unsure as to how they should act and what is acceptable in the company.
