Ipas is a global non-profit organization that works worldwide to eliminate deaths and complications from unsafe abortion and increase women's ability to exercise their sexual and reproductive rights. Ipas's work is grounded in the belief that women everywhere must have the opportunity to determine their futures, care for their families and manage their fertility. Based on our mission, Ipas Nigeria works in partnership with numerous stakeholders, including government officials, health providers, youth groups, women's groups, law enforcement officers, journalists, and legal professionals, to advance women's sexual and reproductive health and rights.
Through our Policy and Advocacy work, we create the enabling policy environment for women and girls to enjoy their Sexual Reproductive Health and Rights as enshrined in most International, Regional, and National legal frameworks endorsed by the Nigeria Government.
In the realization of this goal in Nigeria, we supported the domestication of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act at the National level, which is the most comprehensive legal framework for the prevention and response to Gender Based Violence in Nigeria. Based on the successes recorded, Ipas Nigeria through the WISH Project, funded by the FCDO deployed the same strategy leading to the adoption or implementation of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition laws in some selected States, with a goal of ensuring women’s access to justice and comprehensive medical care.
In specific, Ipas Nigeria supported the Jigawa State Government in the adoption and implementation of the VAPP Law, partnering with a Coalition of Civil Society Organizations in the State. The law was passed, using an evidence-based advocacy approach that worked and has been deployed in other States where we work.
To ensure that this Strategy is properly documented and replicated in all our advocacy efforts for policy reforms in Nigeria, we are seeking to engage a consultant to develop an Advocacy Strategy for the Country office using the learnings and approach deployed in Jigawa State.
