    Safety Advisor (Northwest and Mobile)

    Overall purpose of Role:

    The Safety Advisors lead INSO service delivery in a geographic region, and represent INSO towards the authorities, the stakeholders, the partners and the humanitarian community. As areas coordinators, INSO Safety Advisors lead a local team in 1 or several field office. Safety Advisors provide security analysis and advice that is vital to the efforts of the NGO community to deliver aid and assistance to the thousands of people who need it. They build and maintain a diverse network of contacts, articulate complex political and socio-economic analysis from an objective, neutral perspective, produce and disseminate written products and deliver briefings on a time-sensitive basis. They identify trends and patterns within quantitative datasets of security incidents, and support partners with crisis management, when asked so. Safety advisors also represent INSO among a diverse and important audience of members and a wide network of contacts, including UN agencies, international donors and organizations, local communities, and their leaders.Main

    Duties and Responsibilities:

    • As INSO specialist for the area of responsibility, provide qualified advisories to NGOs on safety and security management, and access management whilst managing and developing the capacities of INSOs team dedicated to the area.
    • Establish and maintain an active information network, which includes NGOs, the UN, military forces, and other national and international security actors to obtain credible and relevant safety information.
    • Provide NGOs with timely and credible security information and contextual analysis of the local security situation through daily alerts and reports, weekly incident lists, bi-weekly analytical reports, and other thematic reports.
    • Facilitate and lead regional NGO community security roundtables.
    • Assist NGOs in developing their own security management capacities by reviewing policy documents, conducting site-security surveys, and assisting in crisis evacuation planning.
    • Manage a small office team, including supervision national staff and oversight of local logistics and administration.
    • Effectively represent, promote and protect INSO's mandate of independence, impartiality and neutrality.
    • Support to NGOs with real time incident and crisis management
    • Cover the other SA duties for absent SAs. Includes simultaneous coverage of several regions.
    • Support with sharing of best practices and with team capacity development.
    • Support with monitoring and improving compliance in field team deliveries.

    PERSON SPECIFICATION

    Knowledge, Skills and Experience

    Essential:

    • Fluency in English, both written and spoken. 
    • Proven writing, editing, and analytical skills and the keenest eye for detail.
    • Significant experience in Northwest or Northeast regions of Nigeria, with existing information networks.
    • Personal and professional resilience in a fast moving, high output, quality-driven program.
    • Experience in the humanitarian, and/or risk management and/or humanitarian access sectors.
    • Independent drive, motivation, and excellence, and ability to operate and sustainably manage staff and teams under strict systems and deadlines.
    • Well-developed personal, organisational and team management skills and standards in a diverse multicultural setting.
    • Demonstrable understanding of humanitarian safety practices and principles.
    • Graduate level education in a relevant field or equivalent work experience.

    Nice to Have:

    • Prior experience in an inter-agency role.
    • Local languages.
    • Experience with NGO security and/or project management.
    • Experience of partnership with INSO.
