    Hatchery Manager

    Job Objectives 

    • Fish hatchery managers direct and oversee fish hatcheries and coordinate the activities of the fish hatchery workers. Manage activities such as marine farms trap and spawn fish, incubate eggs and rear fish according to management and fish culturing techniques. 

    Key Tasks 

    • Conduct and supervise stock examinations in order to identify diseases or parasites.
    • Confer with biologists, fish pathologists, and other fishery personnel to obtain data concerning fish habits, diseases, food, and environmental requirements.
    • Determine, administer, and execute policies relating to operations administration and standards, and facility maintenance.
    • Monitor environments to ensure maintenance of optimum conditions for aquatic life.
    • Account for and disburse funds.
    • Collect and record growth, production, and environmental data.
    • Collect information regarding techniques for fish collection and fertilization, spawn incubation and treatment of spawn and fry.
    • Determine how to allocate resources, and how to respond to unanticipated problems such as insect infestation, flooding and fire.
    • Devise and participate in activities to improve fish hatching and growth rates, and to prevent disease in hatcheries.
    • Direct and monitor the transfer of mature fish to lakes, ponds, streams, or commercial tanks.
    • Prepare reports required by state and federal laws.
    • Supervise and train aquaculture and fish hatchery support workers.
    • Identify environmental requirements of a particular species, and select and oversee the preparation of sites for species cultivation.
    • Operate and maintain cultivating and harvesting equipment.
    • Coordinate the selection and maintenance of brood stock.
    • Direct and monitor trapping and spawning of fish, egg incubation, and fry rearing, applying knowledge of management and fish culturing techniques.
    • Design and construct pens, floating stations, and collector strings or fences for sea farms.
    • Inspect fish farm operations
    • Providing guidance and expert advice to management or other groups on technical, systems-, or process-related topics.
    • Managers determine, administer, and execute policy relating to the administration, facility maintenance, and standards of hatchery operations
    • All other duties as assigned.

     Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience 

    • Diploma holder/B.Sc. Agriculture, Aquaculture or Animal Husbandry or related engendering degree
    • Minimum  of 5 years’ experience as assistant hatchery manager in a large modern commercial fish farm
    • Experience in Africa and/or with Catfish will be appreciated
    • Knowledge or past experience in the use of re-circulatory systemsrequired.
    • Good knowledge of spoken and written English
    • Experience in fish disease prevention and control
    • Understanding of Aquaculture Engineering Principles

    Farm Manager

    Job Objectives 

    The Farm Manager is responsible for the breeding and rearing of fish for the wholesale or retail trade.

    Key Tasks 

    • Managers determine, administer, and execute policy relating to the administration, facility maintenance, and standards of fish farm operations
    • Assign to workers duties such as fertilizing and incubating spawn, feeding and transferring fish, and planting, cultivating, and harvesting.
    • Tracking fish life cycles and growth rates and controlling disease.
    • Direct and monitor worker activities such as treatment and rearing of fingerlings, maintenance of equipment, and harvesting of fish.
    • Plan work schedules according to personnel and equipment availability, tidal levels, feeding schedules, or transfer and harvest needs.
    • Observe fish and beds or ponds to detect diseases, monitor fish growth, determine quality of fish, or determine completeness of harvesting.
    • Perform both supervisory and management functions such as accounting, marketing, and personnel work.
    • Train workers in spawning, rearing, cultivating, and harvesting methods, and in the use of equipment.
    • Record the numbers and types of fish reared, harvested, released, sold, and shipped.
    • Interview and select new employees. Maintain workers' time records.
    • Prepare or direct the preparation of fish food, and specify medications to be added to food and water to treat fish for diseases.
    • Supervise the artificial spawning of various salmon and trout species.
    • Calculating the feeding regime,
    • Monitoring the health of the fish and taking action to treat them when appropriate;
    • Planning breeding programmes and growing schedules to obtain maximum efficiency and adhering to environmental standards;
    • Applying knowledge of fish habitats and their effective time management;
    • Understanding legislation and how to implement this into practical application;
    • Ensuring the water supply is of a sufficient quality for the stock;
    • Being aware of different water management techniques;
    • Being adaptable to new technologies as they develop and learning practical skills;
    • Paying close attention to detail to avoid expensive fish losses in what can be a high risk industry;
    • Possessing stock skills such as fish handling, spawning, grading and harvesting;
    • Updating knowledge of fish health and nutrition;
    • Maintaining records of stocks.
    • All other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience 

    • Diploma holder/B.Sc. Agriculture, Aquaculture or Animal Husbandry or related engendering degree
    • Minimum 10 years’ experience as Fish Farm Manager
    • Knowledge or past experience in the use of re-circulatory systemsrequired.
    • Experience in Africa and catfish farming would be highly desirable.
