WaterAid Nigeria, an international non-governmental organization operating in Nigeria since 1995 to bring about needed improvements in safe drinking water, sanitation, and hygiene. WaterAid is currently recruiting for motivated, qualified candidates for the position of Sanitation Marketing Consultant. The Consultants will support WaterAid’s SanMark effort as part of the Sustainable Total Sanitation (STS) project - which is aimed at building the supply of aspirational, affordable sanitation solutions for Nigerian households, as well as helping generate awareness of, and demand for, these products. Fewer than 30% of Nigerians have access to improved sanitation, and about one quarter of the population (over 45 million) still defecate in the open. These conditions contribute significantly to the contamination of Nigeria’s land and water, and to its tremendous burden of disease, especially among the poor. However, they also point to the enormous need for an expanded market of sanitation products and services.
In Enugu and Ekiti states, WaterAid has conducted in-depth market research and human-centred product development. Through these processes, WaterAid has established the Water Easy Toilet (WET), a product line which includes three models. The WET products make use of a unique, low-cost squatting pan that functions as a water-seal toilet (eliminating odours and flies), yet its water requirement for flushing is minimal. WaterAid has trained entrepreneurs in Enugu and Ekiti to produce the WET product line. The entrepreneurs (who were already working in the construction industry) function as ‘one-stop shops’ which manufacture the products, sell them to consumers, and arrange for delivery and installation. Sales agents at the community level are in the process of being recruited and trained; their efforts to generate demand and sales will be scaled up in the near future.
The Consultants will lead, coach, and support WaterAid’s SanMark effort at the State level during this critical scale-up phase. The Consultants will assess and improve the business model and implement other needed actions in order to expand the market and increase sales.
