  • International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) is an international non-profit agricultural research-for-development (R4D) organization established in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and a member of the CGIAR Consortium. Our R4D approach is anchored on the development needs of the tropics. We work with partners to enhance crop quality and productivity, reduce producer and consumer risks, and generate wealth from agriculture. We have more than 100 internationally recruited scientists from about 35 countries and 900 nationally recruited staff based in various stations across Africa.

    Fieldbank Manager

    Recruitment Type: National (3-year renewable contract)

    Responsibilities
    Successful candidate will among other things perform the following duties:

    • To effectively and efficiently manage operations of the Genetic Resources Center (GRC) fieldbank including staff and resources;
    • To manage the conservation and characterization of GRC clonal crops in the field particular cassava, yam and Musa to a high standards;
    • To assist in the achievement of GRC performance targets and to contribute to the development of GRC as a whole;
    • To liaise effectively with the in vitro Genebank of GRC;
    • To ensure the fieldbank follows best practice and in a modern fieldbank particularly in areas of barcoding, data management and mechanization;
    • To liaise with other units within IITA particularly breeders on the evaluation of germplasm;
    • To exist in the planning and implementation of collecting missions;
    • To undertake capacity development of NARS and other partners;
    • Assist in the development and implementation of research activities involving the fieldbank.

    Qualifications

    • M.Sc in Plant Science, Plant Genetics, Crop Production, Agronomy or related field with 5 years’ experience performing same role.

    Competencies
    The ideal candidate must have:

    • Good Communication skill;
    • Good field research management skills
    • Good field data collection and management skills
    • Good ability to speak more than one Nigeria language.
