    PRIMARY SCHOOL TEACHER (Application Ref Code: PST 101)

    Job Summary
    Primary school teachers develop schemes of work and lesson plans in line with curriculum objectives. They facilitate learning by establishing a relationship with pupils aged about 3 to 11, and by their organisation of learning resources and the classroom learning environment.

    The ideal primary school teachers develop and foster the appropriate skills and social abilities to enable the optimum development of children, according to age, ability and aptitude.

    They assess and record progress and prepare pupils for examinations. They link pupils' knowledge to earlier learning and develop ways to encourage it further, and challenge and inspire pupils to help them deepen their knowledge and understanding.

    Typical work activities
    Day-to-day activities may include:

    • {C}·         teaching all areas of the primary curriculum;
    • {C}·         taking responsibility for the progress of a class of primary-age pupils;
    • {C}·         organising the classroom and learning resources and creating displays to encourage a positive learning environment;
    • {C}·         planning, preparing and presenting lessons that cater for the needs of the whole ability range within their class;
    • {C}·         motivating pupils with enthusiastic, imaginative presentation;
    • {C}·         maintaining discipline;
    • {C}·         preparing and marking work to facilitate positive pupil development;
    • {C}·         meeting requirements for the assessment and recording of pupils' development;
    • {C}·         providing feedback to parents and carers on a pupil's progress at parents' evenings and other meetings;
    • {C}·         coordinating activities and resources within a specific area of the curriculum, and supporting colleagues in the delivery of this specialist area;
    • {C}·         working with others to plan and coordinate work;
    • {C}·         keeping up to date with changes and developments in the structure of the curriculum;
    • {C}·         organising and taking part in school events, outings and activities which may take place at weekends or in the evening;
    • {C}·         liaising with colleagues and working flexibly, particularly in smaller schools;
    • {C}·         working with parents and school governors (in England, Northern Ireland and Wales) or School Boards (in Scotland) to maximise their involvement in the school and the development of resources for the school;
    • {C}·         meeting with other professionals such as education welfare officers and educational psychologists, if required.

    SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER (Application Ref Code: SST 201)

    Job Summary
    Secondary school teachers teach one or two national curriculum subjects to pupils aged 11 to 18.

    Teachers support, observe and record the progress of their class. They also plan lessons in line with national objectives, with the aim of ensuring a healthy culture of learning.

    The ideal secondary school teachers must keep up to date with developments in their subject area, new resources, methods and national objectives. The role involves liaising and networking with other professionals, parents and carers, both informally and formally.

    Typical work activities
    Day-to-day activities may include:

    • {C}·         preparing and delivering lessons to a range of classes of different ages and abilities;
    • {C}·         marking work, giving appropriate feedback and maintaining records of pupils' progress and development;
    • {C}·         researching new topic areas, maintaining up-to-date subject knowledge, and devising and writing new curriculum materials;
    • {C}·         selecting and using a range of different learning resources and equipment, including podcasts and interactive whiteboards;
    • {C}·         preparing pupils for qualifications and external examinations;
    • {C}·         managing pupil behaviour in the classroom and on school premises, and applying appropriate and effective measures in cases of misbehaviour;
    • {C}·         undertaking clerical duties, such as taking on the role of form tutor, and supporting pupils on an individual basis through academic or personal difficulties;
    • {C}·         communicating with parents and carers over pupils' progress and participating in departmental meetings, parents' evenings and whole school training events;
    • {C}·         liaising with other professionals, such as learning mentors, careers advisers, educational psychologists and education welfare officers;
    • {C}·         supervising and supporting the work of teaching assistants, trainee teachers and newly qualified teachers (NQTs);
    • {C}·         participating in and organising extracurricular activities, such as outings, social activities and sporting events;
    • {C}·         undergoing regular observations and participating in regular in-service training (INSET) as part of continuing professional development (CPD)
