    Job Introduction

    Africa’s media landscape is changing. It is one of the fastest developing news markets in the world with mobile technology transforming lives, internet connectivity increasing, the radio market remaining relatively strong and Television migrating from analogue to digital.

    The BBC World Service remains the leading international broadcaster in Africa, reaching a weekly audience of more than 100 million across all platforms and Social Media. Globally, the BBC reaches a weekly audience of 320 million across various platforms.

    Over the next four years, the BBC World Service will be expanding its multimedia operations in Africa by doubling the number of language services from 6 to 12. Three of the new language services, Yoruba, Igbo, and Pidgin, will serve our audiences in Nigeria and West Africa. They will be based in Lagos, working alongside our operation in Abuja from where the BBC currently produces its Hausa service output. There is a strong emphasis on reaching and connecting with young audiences.

    We are now looking for excellent Broadcast Journalists with the relevant technical and language skills to join the new Yoruba service.

    Shift work will be required which will include early mornings, late nights, weekends and public holidays.

    Role Responsibilities
    As a BBC Broadcast Journalist you will work creatively across all digital platforms - audio, video and text - to ensure that the Yoruba Service output develops and grows a distinctive character and status in its target area. On a daily basis, you will engage actively with the audience ensuring consistency of output. You will be required occasionally to do some field reporting.

    The successful candidate will have some experience within a media environment. Fluent in Yoruba and English (written and spoken), you will have experience of delivering creative output on online platforms. Knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs is essential. You will have knowledge of and recent experience of living in the target area, including a good understanding of the complexities of Nigeria. Ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.

    You must have work authorisation for Nigeria.

    Main Duties

    • To create original digital material for all multimedia output (audio, online, and social).
    • To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required.
    • To keep abreast of evolving news stories and emerging trends aimed at the Nigeria audience
    • Must have an awareness of and a keen interest in the needs of young and female audiences
    • To create sharable content with the other Nigeria Language Services and wider BBC outlets.
    • All broadcast journalists with bi lingual skills may be required to work with or move to other Nigeria Language service teams.
    • To perform live across all digital platforms, audio or video with or without a script or in recording sessions, either as Programme Producer, or as a participant in others' productions.
    • To attend editorial meetings and contribute to the commissioning process, looking beyond the daily news agenda to ensure a rich, varied and original coverage across all platforms.
    • All journalists may be required to travel off base on short reporting trips and assignments, as required.
    • To ensure that BBC Editorial guidelines and all relevant legal, contractual and copyright requirements are met, referring upwards in cases of difficulty or doubt.
    • To contribute to other areas of the BBC including BBC News and Online.

    Required Skills & Experience

    • Fluency and up to date knowledge of Yoruba (written and spoken) and the ability to type quickly and accurately.
    • Fluency in English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    • Familiarity with video editing and writing for pictures and understanding social media.
    • Familiarity with news production systems, and a willingness to learn to operate new technology and to be able to adapt to different working methods.
    • Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to a young audience.

    Role Responsibilities

    • The Digital Technical Producer will provide a full range of quality technical services for audio, video and text to help put the best content on air in a busy newsroom working to tight deadlines. You must be familiar with the latest digital production equipment.
    • Accountable to the Editor, you will be proactive and be required to perform duties in Radio Studios, Workshops, Edit Suites, and on Computers, as well as on Outside Broadcasts.
    • You will have an excellent knowledge of local, regional and international news and current affairs. You will have recent experience of living in Nigeria including understanding its complexities. Ability to work under pressure and to react to breaking news is essential.
    • You must have work authorisation for Nigeria.

    Main Duties

    • To work with editorial teams to provide technical direction for daily output
    • To provide technical support to the team daily and including duty trips as required
    • To help ingest material from the field and convert it into the correct format for editing
    • To maintain a log of equipment schedule of servicing and maintenance
    • To provide solutions to technical challenges, to resolve simple technical problems and to report to London any major maintenance problems
    • To participate actively in daily editorial output and to technically translate editorial vision into reality
    • To help train production teams to conduct simple technical tasks

    Job Purpose

    Overall Purpose of the Job 

    • Planning BJ will help and support the West Africa Planning Senior Broadcast Journalist in the coverage of Nigeria and West Africa stories in the most innovative, cost-effective and relevant manner primarily for Pidgin, Yoruba and Igbo.  
    • You will support West Africa Planning SBJ by taking responsibility for breaking news coverage and in particular liaising with Service Editors to ensure deployments and sharing of material across the wider BBC. You will also work with West Africa Planning SBJ to plan the production of longer term digital content across the region.  
    • You will work with Services Editors to research and plan big interview bids which are relevant to the target area.

Joining BBC Hausa you’ll be a part of the team for a leading international broadcaster, the BBC World Service, which reaches more than 90 million people in Africa weekly on Radio, TV, Online (language sites and bbcafrica.com), Mobile and Social Media. We broadcast to Africa in seven languages: Pidgin, English, French, Hausa, Kinyarwanda/Kirundi, Somali, and Swahili. BBC Hausa is the lead provider of radio and digital news in Nigeria and for Hausa speakers across the continent and operates the one of Africa’s top Hausa digital sites. 

    In this role, you’ll be leading the BBC Hausa digital effort. Our strategy has a strong emphasis on reaching and connecting with young audiences. So we are looking for an experienced senior broadcast journalist to provide the creative leadership and vision needed to deliver a mobile, social and online strategy which ensures that our editorial impact in Africa and beyond remains the best.  
     
    Role Responsibility

    • We are looking for a senior broadcast journalist to shape digital editorial development and delivery across all our digital platforms.
    • They’ll be expected to help influence the growth of digital skills and approaches across the BBC Hausa team.
    • Our ambitions are high for BBC Hausa, and that includes expanding our digital footprint globally.
    • You’ll be expected to lead our push in our core market, Nigeria was your role would be based. 
    • We expect you to work in close collaboration with our new digital language services Pidgin, Igbo and Yoruba team located in Lagos. 
    • Above all else, you’re a journalist. One who finds great stories and content that the world needs to know.
    • In this role, you’ll be expected to retain your news instinct and using your skills at digital storytelling, come up with new ways in which our digital audiences can consume that content.
    • That will, more often than not be a mobile first approach. It will be snappy; it will be on demand, it will be intriguing; without ever losing sight of the authority and presence that a BBC news story carries.

    The Ideal Candidate

    • It goes without saying that you will be an innovator, who is always looking for the next best way that our audiences can consume their media, but you will still need to make sure we are looking after our current digital platforms.

    Main Duties

    • BBC Hausa thinks mobile first and you will be expected to use your extensive knowledge about the user experience to deliver exciting, visual journalism.
    • You will be responsible for ensuring we continue to deliver best practice.
    • You will have ideas about the mixture of content, frequency, packaging and discoverability for the mobile audience.
    • You will be expected to produce content that will prove to be sharable for online and social - including text stories, picture stories and videos. In order to do that you will have accurate editing and writing skills in Hausa and also be able to reversion English text into Hausa
    • To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required. To think through and take a lead around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches for yourself and others.

To make the best use of data in order to drive and inform tactical decisions about the type, format and timing of content produced and posted as well as tracking how content performs.
    • As a senior digital expert to the service, you will be a main point of reference for supporting training needs for your team and the department.
    • To identify or create highly shareable BBC content and compose posts, including pictures and video where relevant, to drive high level engagement, and referral back to BBC Swahili output.
    • To co-ordinate coverage of major events across all output. To be responsible for wider planning and coverage.

    Skills, Knowledge & Experience Required
    We are looking for an exceptional digital journalist who has the following skills, knowledge and experience:-

    • A full command and up to date knowledge of spoken and written Hausa as a first language. 
    • A good knowledge of English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.
    • Significant recent experience as a digital journalist both in originating ideas and material and in editing the work of others.
    • Excellent news and editorial judgment.
    • Ability to supervise the journalistic work of others and manage staff including assisting in their training and development. A good understanding of how to manage and motivate others. 
    • Demonstrable track record of imaginative and advance understanding of social media and mobile platforms.
    • Wide, thorough and up to date familiarity with the target areas and an in-depth understanding of its news and current affairs, history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience.
    • Visual editing experience in either editing video or creating social media content 
    • Experience of managing digital communities and the ability to communicate diplomatically with audiences.
    • Understanding and appreciation of the aims of the BBC World Service.
    • Flexibility and willing to learn and work if needed on other media platforms.
