    Laboratory Supervisor

    Job Description

    • Scope of responsibilities and accountabilities: (non-exhaustive list)
    • Planning, organizing and carrying out laboratory activities and supervising the laboratory staff according to MSF protocols, security measures and hygiene standards, in order to support the MSF medical team in the diagnosis of patients’ diseases.
    • Participating in the project planning and follow-up and reviewing the laboratory budget when necessary in order to support MSF’s medical activities.
    • Ensuring the compliance of MSF hygiene and safety protocols, both individually and collectively as well as informing staff of existing biological risks.
    • Performing laboratory tests and carrying out sample collection (serology, hematology, biochemistry, bacteriology, parasitology ...) in accordance with prescriptions as well as ensuring that quality control tests are carried out regularly. Informing the doctor of the results of the tests and keeping a record of the analysis with data from patients.
    • Ensuring proper management (cleaning, maintenance, arranging) of all laboratory equipment and the adequate supply of needed equipment and material in order to prevent stock-outs. This includes being responsible for all required automatic instrument calibration, ensuring that no material is taken out of laboratories without prior authorization and carrying out a proper storage system and conditions, inventory, etc. In cooperation with logistics department, ensuring that cold chain is properly maintained in Laboratory areas for both, samples and reagents.
    • In the absence of a Laboratory Manager, ensuring proper registration and needs of all lab related activities and implementing a correct use of the associated management tool (EpyTryp. Etc.) in order to have a proper recording of laboratory activities. Preparing and sending slides/samples for external quality control .
    • Supervising, in close coordination with the HR department, the associated processes (recruitment, training/induction, coaching, evaluation, potential detection, development and communication) of the staff under his/her responsibility in order to ensure both the sizing and the amount of knowledge required
    • Ensuring that all staff using medical devices are qualified and trained. Ensuring cleaning and minor maintenance tasks are performed according to the protocols. Reporting any malfunction to the project biomedical service.
    • Producing regular reports on the testing and on any issues / problems related to laboratory personnel and / or the material used.
    • Day-to-day running and coordination of all laboratory activities. On the job and theoretical teaching/training of incentive laboratory technicians.
    • Collect samples in an appropriate manner and according to the criteria in place, for further processing of sample in other locations if need. Ensure that results reach their destination timely.
    • Ensure the equipment is available, handled carefully and that consumable goods are available and ordered in due time.
    • Facilitate any needs relating to epidemic surveillance.
    • Supervise lab consumable material and drugs, weekly order is done according to schedule agreed by project pharmacy supervisor and MTL, follow-up of daily, weekly registration books and reports.
    • Ensure good storage conditions, inventories, follow-up of expired items is maintained.
    • In coordination with the HR team to ensure the daily management of human resources for the lab team, rosters are done on time, holiday is plane in advance, and staffs are present on duty as per roster, any absentees on the schedule reported to the referent responsible. And the lab team have their objectives in line with their job descriptions.
    • Resolve interpersonal conflicts arising among the staff under supervision including incentive lab tech.
    • Ensure quality control of lab equipment is done according to MSF guide.
    • Keep inventory of all MSF lab equipment
    • Develop SOPs for the different procedures.
    • Any other responsibility assigned by the direct supervisor

    Requirements

    • Education: Essential Diploma - Laboratory Technician
    • Experience: Essential 2 years experience in a laboratory, preferably as a Lab Tech.
    • Desirable: MSF or another NGO, desirable in a clinical laboratory.
    • Languages: Mission and local language essential.
    • Knowledge: Essential computer literacy (word, excel and internet).
    • Competencies: Flexibility, organizational skills, teamwork and cooperation, team management, stress management and commitment to humanitarian objectives and to MSF Principles.

    Nurse

    Job Description
    Scope of responsibilities and accountabilities: (non-exhaustive list)

    • Provide nursing care, treatment and follow-up for children suffering from severe malnutrition, according to MSF TFP (ITFC/ATFC/SFP) protocols, universal hygienic standards and other procedures, in order to ensure a good delivery of care and improve their nutritional conditions.
    • Implementing and following at all times the universal hygiene standards, security rules and other protocols and procedures regarding nursing and children nutrition matters.
    • Ensuring proper functioning of the Therapeutic Program. This includes:
    • Daily collecting the number of new admissions and exits and to check the attendance
    • Calculating the quantity of food needed for the day based on the number of children registered
    • Ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, detecting the priority acute cases, carrying out first aid care when necessary and referring them to the doctor if necessary.
    • Carrying-out all patient’s related tasks for the admission, weighing and measuring the children, identifying the degree and types of malnutrition, administration (patient card, register,..) etc.
    • Ensuring that medical and nutritional care is properly delivered to the patients and to daily follow the evolution of the patients.
    • Carrying-out consultations to children and their parents, undertaking a complete clinical examination of children, looking for associated pathologies, drawing up nutritional surveillance forms and milk cards, providing required vaccination, etc.
    • Carrying-out surveillance and follow-up of patients’ medical and nutritional evolution, identifying possible emergency situations arising and keeping doctors informed if necessary.
    • Providing advice and inform children’s families about everything concerning the hospitalization, participate in the health education of the mothers and/or treatment process.
    • Controlling all pharmacy, food, and medical equipment (carrying out inventories, checking its quality and its functioning, storage conditions, doing follow-up of expired drugs, etc.)
    • Carrying-out and supervise administrative procedures and documents (fill in patients files, forms, statistics, etc.), ensure an appropriate written/oral handover, and report any problematic situations and cases arising.
    • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
    • Organize and carry out care of ITFC patients, specifically regular surveillance, giving medications as prescribed and recognizing unwell and deteriorating patients and increasing level of care and attention.
    • Adhere to a daily schedule and plan time to perform all care appropriate to each patient in your care.
    • Documentation: responsible to filling in chart and registers each day and for every patient in your care. Help to collect data and fill in any forms deemed needed by nurse supervisors, doctors, expat supervisors, and data clerk.
    • Responsible for health educating the caregivers on breastfeeding, hygiene and basic care.
    • Understand and follow all COVID-19 prevention measures
    • Follow instructions from supervisor about allocation of patients and be flexible to any changes deemed appropriate by supervisor.
    • Responsible to organize and manage those under your supervision while on shift, including nurse assistants, milk mothers, and cleaners.
    • Work as a team with Doctors and carry out orders following MSF protocols and procedures.
    • Understanding and carrying out MSF protocols for care of the patients in ITFC, specifically adhering to the Nutrition protocols and the Paediatric Nursing Guidelines.
    • Responsible for IPC measures in the ward, including cleaning biomedical equipment or delegating cleaning tasks to those under your supervision, example cleaners and nurse assistants.
    • Treat all patients, caregivers and colleagues with respect and neutrality.
    • Understanding the complex needs of patients can extend past providing medical care and instead provide holistic patient and family centered care.
    • Understand and provide education to caregivers on how to best look after their children and improve feeding practices for discharge and the future. Especially important to educate mothers on breastfeeding and hygiene practices.
    • Responsible for basic care for all patients/caregivers including feeding (as per protocol), bathing, c bed making and spacing and clean equipment.
    • Responsible to ensure patients receive up to date, current and hygienic care, using best practice in all aspects of care provided. Including intravenous medications and devices, all must be used appropriately and according to protocol.
    • Management: Responsible to organize own leave and sick leave as per regulations.

    Requirements
    Education:

    • Bachelor's Degree or Diploma in Nursing with nutritional training essentials

    Experience:

    • Desirable 2 years of previous experience in nutrition program required. Experience in MSF or other NGO’s and /or in developing countries desirable.

    Languages:

    • Local language essential. Mission language desirable.

    Competencies:

    Medical Doctor

    Accountabilities / Responsibilities (Non-exhaustive List)

    • Participate to medical/humanitarian emergency assessment or explo-action or intervention and Provide outpatient and inpatient medical care to patients / beneficiaries according to adapted and updated medical knowledge, MSF protocols, Guidelines, values and universal hygiene standards to improve the patients/beneficiaries health conditions during emergency explo or intervention.
    • Apply medical knowledge and skills to diagnose and prevention.
    • Carry out outpatient and inpatient consultations, prescribing the necessary treatment respecting MSF protocols.
    • Check and control the rational distribution of medicines and equipment under his/her responsibility and take care the quality, disinfection and sterilization of the medical material.
    • Participate in the collection and analysis of epidemiological data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or project coordinator about any problem or complication that may arise.
    • Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
    • Knows and ensures all MSF medical protocols are followed and implemented, checking universal precautions are followed at all times and reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control.
    • Manage the team under his / her direct responsibility according to MSF HR policies and procedures, supervising their performance, organizing and scheduling shifts and rotations, directly participating in emergencies and on calls if necessary
    • Applying medical knowledge and skills to diagnosis and treatment of children with malnutrition, ensuring integrated management.
    • Prescribing the necessary treatment, respecting MSF nutrition protocols.
    • Follow up the evolution of patients and discuss the problem cases during the medical ward round and install referral system.
    • Knowing and ensuring all updated MSF medical protocols and universal precautions are followed and implemented, reducing bio-hazard risks and improving infection control.
    • Ensuring professional autonomy and confidentiality are respected and a good attitude and proper bedside manner towards the patient and their care takers and the rest of the medical team.
    • Following up the evolution of the hospitalized ITFC patients through daily medical rounds, consultations and examinations, prescribing the necessary treatment following MSF protocols, deciding whether they can be discharged or transferred to other program – ATFC in collaboration with other doctors- and informing the family about the patient’s evolution.
    • Checking and controlling the rational use of drugs and equipment under his/her responsibility and taking care the quality, disinfection, and sterilization of the medical material.
    • Assuring general compliance with standing hygiene standards.
    • Participating in the collection and analysis of epidemiological nutrition data, checking its validity and informing the line manager or MTL about any problems or complications of the patient’s illness and medical errors.
    • Ensure ongoing training of the medical/paramedical multidisciplinary team in order to optimize the quality of care.
    • Participate in the medical meeting and any other relevant meetings.
    • Any other responsibility delegated by the supervisor.

    Required Skills and Conditions

    • MBBS qualification / Medical Doctor Diploma. Desirable certificate in Tropical Medicine and Emergency Response Training (ERT)
    • 2 years experience minimum as a Medical Doctor in pediatrics and nutrition clinical work(can be within medical training). Desirable experience in ITFC, work before with MSF or another NGO.
    • Languages: English required additional local languages desirable. Competencies: People Management, Commitment to MSF Principles, Flexibility, Result Oriented, Teamwork, good spirit, Pro-active, initiative, reactive and anticipative.
    • Computer Literacy: Excel and Word required.
    • Work Location: Kano
