The Association of Vice-chancellors of Nigerian Universities (AVCNU) is the umbrella organization for Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal, State and Private Universities. This went on until the early 90's when licenses were issued to individuals and private organizations to establish Private Universities. It was therefore because of the need to bring all Vice-Chancellors together irrespective of their proprietorship that informed the formation of the Association. Hitherto, all the three components of the Association, the Federal, State and Private had their own Committees viz Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Federal Universities (CVC), Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian State Universities (CVCNSU) and Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Private Universities (CVCNPU).
