About Open Sociiety Initiative For West Africa
The Open Society Initiative for West Africa is active in 10 countries in the region (Benin, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, and Sierra Leone) and focuses on law, justice and human rights, and economic and political governance. The initiative pursues the de... read morevelopment of open societies by supporting and building partnerships with local and regional groups that promote inclusive democratic governance, transparency and accountability, and active citizenship.
We helped create and spin off the West Africa Civil Society Institute, a pioneering institution dedicated to building and strengthening civil society organizations. The initiative also supports public education and awareness raising activities on human rights issues, natural resources management, and freedom of information.
We participate in advocacy campaigns on the free movement of goods and services and the need for companies to publish what they pay African governments for natural resource extraction in several countries. The initiative has deepened its work on elections by initiating the region’s first elections situation room, a rapid-response electoral monitoring activity that brings civil society groups together to help ensure free, fair, and credible elections.
