NURHI is part of a broader Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (other sites include India, Kenya, and Senegal). NURHI is implemented by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health Center for Communication Programs (JHU∙CCP), in partnership with the Association for Reproductive and Family Health and Center for Communication Programs Nigeria. Nigerian women have an average of six children over the course of their lifetime and the national population - already the largest in Africa - is expected to double within 25 years. Poor access to and under-utilization of modern family planning methods contributes to high death rates among mothers and children across the country. NURHI assists national, state and local government and private health services to expand access to and demand for modern family planning. The project works through four key approaches: Strengthening Service Delivery: NURHI works with networks of private and public sector health services to improve the quality and availability of a full range of family planning methods.
