Established in 1991, the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF) builds human and institutional capacity for good governance and economic development in Africa. To date the Foundation has empowered governments, parliaments, civic society, private sector and higher education institutions in more than 45 countries and 6 regional economic communities. ACBF supports capacity development through investments, technical support, knowledge generation and sharing across Africa.
ACBF supports capacity building initiatives in Africa in three ways:
Investments in capacity building institutions
ACBF funds strategic capacity building projects and programs submitted by governments of African member countries and non-state actors at both the national and regional levels which demonstrate prospects for maximum impact. Typical capacity development activities include research capacity to support policy formulation and implementation, monitoring and evaluation, policy dialogue between government and non-state actors and institutional strengthening to effectively deliver capacity building programs and track progress. Technical assistance for capacity building projects and programs to formulate, implement and monitor policies at national and regional levels.
ACBF is a knowledge hub on capacity development interventions on the continent and uses this knowledge to provide technical assistance in implementing, monitoring and evaluating the capacity development projects and programs it funds. This also includes technical support for capacity needs assessment, project/program design, monitoring of project/program activities and mid-term and end of project/program evaluations.
Knowledge and learning activities
ACBF supports knowledge and learning through Knowledge Networks, Knowledge Products & Services, Knowledge Forums, and through its Library and Information Resource Centre. The Foundation conducts research on emerging development and capacity building issues on the continent. Since 2011, ACBF publishes its annual flagship report, the Africa Capacity Report (ACR) which measures progress made by African countries annually in capacity development on the continent.
