    Supplementary Reading Materials (SRM) Mapping Consultant

    Details

    • The Atiku Institute for Development (AID) is the hub of all development and humanitarian activities at the American University of Nigeria (AUN).  
    • AID serves as the link between research and development; providing the opportunity for faculty and students of the AUN to conduct research and access funding to implement research findings.
    • The AID was created in 2014 as a Centre focused on development, entrepreneurship and leadership; it transformed into an institute in 2019 to lead all donor-funded development and humanitarian activities implemented by the University.
    • The Institute serves as a one-stop shop for all development initiatives utilizing local knowledge and global expertise to study problems, develop solutions and productize the implementation of the solutions.
    • The Atiku Institute for Development is respected within the development community in Nigeria for its local solutions to local problems, cost-effective project implementation and effective project management.
    • The Institute is currently collaborating with other International Development Partners to implement the Leveraging Education Resources in Nigeria to Read (LEARN to Read) project to which this consultancy will provide support.

    Program Background

    • The Leveraging Education Assistance Resources in Nigeria (LEARN) to Read is a five-year, project funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to support sustainable improvement in reading outcomes for first and second-grade pupils in Nigeria.
    • The goal of LEARN is to strengthen and scale early grade reading (EGR) best practices.
    • LEARN to Read will be implemented closely with the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Education and its agencies, and some selected states.
    • These states have been categorised into Legacy, Launching and On-Demand based on the level of existing EGR practices in each state.
    • LEARN to Read will leverage the experience and expertise in these states for improved reading outcomes.
    • LEARN’s approach prioritizes the development, management, and use/access of decodable and levelled SRMs to improve pupil reading practice.

    Position Summary

    • The Atiku Institute for Development (AID) of the American University of Nigeria (AUN) seeks a consultant who will provide technical support to the Learn to Read project by identifying, mapping and levelling existing P1 to P3 SRMs.
    • In addition, the consultant will investigate the challenges to the utilization of the existing SRMs and identify gaps and shortfalls in availability.
    • The assignment will also require the consultant to propose a plan for the development of additional supplementary reading materials to fill identified gaps.

    Reporting and Supervision:

    • The Supplementary Reading Materials (SRMs) Consultant reports to the AUN lead on the LEARN to Read Project.

    Scope of Work

    Having regard to the objectives stated above, the Consultant shall:

    • Identify and compile a list of available decodable and levelled (Creative Commons) Hausa and English Language EGR SRMs that meet global best standards and are appropriate for primary 1 to primary 3 (P1 to P3)
    • Map the identified SRMs based on content and other curriculum-based relevant criteria.
    • Investigate the challenges to the utilization of the existing SRMs
    • Lead a workshop of relevant stakeholders to align the identified SRMs with Mu Karanta and Let’s Read P1 to P3
    • Identify shortfalls and gaps in availability and propose an SRMs development plan to fill the identified gaps.
    • Other relevant tasks as assigned.

    Result / Deliverable (Total LOE -14 days (100%):

    • Compile a list of titles of available decodable and levelled (Creative Commons) Hausa and English EGR SRMs that meet global best standards and are appropriate for P1 to P3 (2 days)
    • Provide soft copies of titles of available decodable and levelled (Creative Commons) Hausa and English EGR SRMs that meet global best standards and are appropriate for P1 to P3 (1 day)
    • Provide a document showing the mapping of the SRMs indicating and describing each mapping criteria. (1 day)
    • Lead workshop with relevant stakeholders in Bauchi and Sokoto to align SRMs to Mu Karanta and Let’s Read P1 to P3 as agreed (4 days)
    • Produce a workshop report stating the alignment of SRMs to Mu Karanta and Let’s Read P1 to P3 as agreed with stakeholders (1 day)
    • Investigate and report the challenges to the utilization of the existing SRMs (2 days)
    • Identify and report the shortfall and gaps in the availability of SRMs. (1 day)
    • Produce a detailed SRMs development plan to fill the gap in the availability of SRMs (1 day)
    • Produce an activity completion report (1 day) 

    Qualifications and Experience

    The following are the qualification and experience required for this assignment:

    • Specialist in Hausa and English Languages with evidenced knowledge of early grade reading (EGR) skills and pedagogy. A PhD Degree is preferred.
    • Evidence of experience in developing decodable and levelled early grade reading (EGR) supplementary reading materials (SRMs) in Hausa.
    • Familiarity with Mu Karanta! and Let’s Read! developed under USAID/NEIPlus and the Reading and Numeracy Activity (RANA) Hausa literacy materials developed underDFID/UNICEF/FHI360.
