    Supervisory Visa Assistant - Employees of Mission-All/or USEFMs, EFMs or MOHs)

    Duties

    • Basic Function of the Position - The incumbent supervises, monitors and trains a team of five Locally Employed Staff (LE Staff) in the task of processing the full range of non-immigrant and immigrant visas for Nigerian citizens and third-country nationals.
    • Refers only unusual, complex, or questionable case to the LE Staff Visa Specialist or Consular Officer.
    • Employee leads one of five rotating Visa Unit Teams, who share duties over the course of year.

    Qualifications and Evaluations
    Experience:

    • Three (3) years of progressively responsible work experience in the application of regulatory material and in public contact work; including one year of supervisory experience is required. 

    Job Knowledge:

    • Must have detailed knowledge of immigration laws, regulations and procedures and standard guidance relating to correspondence on complex visa issues. 

    Education Requirements:

    • Bachelor’s Degree in one of the following: Business Administration, International Relations, Literature in English, Law or History or related major is required.

    Evaluations:

    • This may be tested. Please specify in your application your level of proficiency in the language(s) listed.

    Language:  

    • Level IV (Fluent) Speaking/Reading/Writing of English is required. Fluent speaking/reading of Yoruba, Igbo, or Hausa is required.

    Skills and Abilities:

    • Ability to make use of Microsoft office packages like MS Word, Outlook and Excel is required.
    • Ability to draft correspondence in level IV English is required; must be able to interpret and discuss in at least one local language.
    • Requires tact and judgment in dealing with the public.
    • Must be able to maintain appropriate confidentiality and to preserve the integrity of the consular system.
    • Must be able to withstand external pressure from persistent applicants and petitioners. Must be able to work under pressure and prioritize work to suit team needs.

    Agency Benefits:

    • Locally Employed Staff, including Members of Household (MOHs), and Third-Country Nationals (TCNs), working at the U.S. Mission in Lagos, Nigeria may receive a compensation package that may include health, separation, and other benefits.
    • For EFMs, benefits should be discussed with the Human Resources Office.
    • The pay plan is assigned at the time of the conditional offer letter by the HR Office.

    • Hiring Preference Selection Process:  Applicants in the following hiring preference categories are extended a hiring preference in the order listed below.

    *Important

    • Applicants who claim status as a preference-eligible U.S. Veteran must submit a copy of their most recent DD-214 (“Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty”), equivalent documentation, or certification.  A “certification” is any written document from the armed forces that certifies the service member is expected to be discharged or released from active duty service in the armed forces under honorable conditions within 120 days after the certification is submitted by the applicant. The certification letter should be on letterhead of the appropriate military branch of the service and contain (1) the military service dates including the expected discharge or release date; and (2) the character of service.  Acceptable documentation must be submitted in order for the preference to be given.
    • ** This level of preference applies to all Foreign Service employees on LWOP and CS with re-employment rights back to their agency or bureau.
