    Shelter/NFI Assistant

    Locations: Gwoza, MMC, and Jere, North East, Nigeria

    The Shelter NFI Assistant is responsible for supporting the implementation of construction and distribution activities for Bama-type shelters across MMC, Jere, and Konduga. Working under the direction of the Shelter NFI Officer and in collaboration with other stakeholders, this position entails providing technical expertise, supervising staff, ensuring construction quality, and creating site plans.

    Tasks and Responsibilities:

    1. Assist in the implementation of construction and distribution activities for Bama-type shelters in Gwoza, MMC, and Jere, according to project objectives and timelines.
    2. Offer technical expertise and guidance to construction teams, ensuring compliance with technical standards, safety protocols, and quality assurance measures.
    3. Supervise construction staff and daily work activities, ensuring adherence to work plans, schedules, and performance standards.
    4. Monitor construction progress, identify challenges or issues, and recommend solutions to ensure the timely completion of shelter projects.
    5. Collaborate with other actors, including government agencies, humanitarian partners, and community representatives, to coordinate activities effectively.
    6. Conduct site assessments and surveys to inform shelter construction planning, site selection, and layout design.
    7. Assist in the preparation of site plans and technical drawings, in coordination with relevant stakeholders and authorities.
    8. Support the distribution of non-food items (NFIs) and other relief supplies, ensuring accurate record-keeping and accountability.
    9. Assist in the procurement of construction materials and equipment, by organisational policies and procedures.
    10. Maintain effective communication and coordination with project stakeholders, providing regular updates on project activities, progress, and challenges.

    Essential Knowledge and Skills:

    1. Minimum of Diploma or vocational training in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field.
    2. Minimum of 2 years of experience in construction-related activities, preferably in humanitarian or development projects.
    3. Basic understanding of construction techniques, materials, and safety procedures.
    4. Ability to supervise and motivate construction teams, with strong leadership and interpersonal skills.
    5. Proficiency in AutoCAD or similar software for creating site plans and technical drawings.
    6. Good organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively.
    7. Excellent communication skills, with proficiency in English and local languages spoken in Borno State.
    8. Willingness to work in remote field locations and under challenging conditions.

    Preferred Experience:

    1. Previous experience working on shelter or NFI distribution projects in conflict-affected or displacement settings.
    2. Familiarity with humanitarian principles, standards, and guidelines for shelter and NFI programming.
    3. Experience working with vulnerable populations and communities, with sensitivity to cultural and gender considerations.
