    Consultant - Graphic Design

    Ref No: 200000RI
    Location: Duste, Jigawa
    Employee Status: Fixed Term

    Background

    • Despite the remarkable progress made globally, in reducing child deaths, almost 10 million children die before they reach their fifth birthday every year. Just five preventable and treatable conditions cause a majority of these deaths, pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles, and malnutrition, with pneumonia contributing the most. Most of the time, those deaths are caused by a combination of the above conditions. Many childhood deaths could be avoided if those children received appropriate and timely care. Pneumonia control is critical to reducing child mortality and achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 globally. Nearly one million child deaths are due to pneumonia, accounting for 39% of all under-five deaths related to infectious causes.  In Nigeria, pneumonia accounts for 18% of all under-five deaths, making pneumonia the leading killer of under-five children.
    • In order to achieve SDG 2 and 3, Nigeria needs to prevent the deaths of approximately 70,000 additional children by 2030 (WHO 2016) and improve pneumonia outcomes as part of Nigeria’s broader child health strategy. Many of the tools to protect, prevent, diagnose and treat pneumonia exist; but doing so requires greater attention to scaling these tools and the use of integrated child health, multi-sectoral approach.
    • The INSPIRING Project implemented by Save the Children, and funded by GSK is among other global commitments by Save the Children towards ending preventable deaths from infectious diseases, including pneumonia and diarrhoea. The goal of the project is to catalyse change and contribute to an accelerated reduction in child deaths from pneumonia and other preventable infectious diseases.
    • In Jigawa state, two evidence-based interventions will be blended into one program in order to influence change. The two programs are Participatory learning and action men’s and women’s groups and the Partnership Defined Quality Scorecard (PDQS). The program intends to create and strengthen women’s and men’s groups to identify and prioritise issues; to plan, monitor and evaluate group member actions by challenging discriminatory norms and promoting gender-equitable approaches.
    • The INSPIRING project will support the community to create transformative social and behaviour change. The behaviour change will in-turn, increase caregiver knowledge and awareness of childhood illness.  It will also increase caregivers’ ability to identify danger signs, which increases their preventive and care-seeking practices and actions at the community level.
    • To facilitate women and men group's discussions, facilitator’s guides (flipbooks) will be developed and produced. In addition, Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) materials (posters) will be produced and disseminated around intervention communities to reinforce and amplify messages aimed at increasing community awareness about pneumonia prevention and treatment.
