    Child-Friendly Space Facilitator (Volunteer)

    Child-Friendly Space Facilitator (Volunteer)

    • The Child-Friendly Space Facilitator has the responsibility to initiate, oversee and support the implementation of child protection strategies and CFS activities at the camp/community centre level. The CFS Facilitator will be responsible for coordinating children’s participation, activities the work of and providing guidance to the Community Structures and Children on Child protection, child rights and children’s forums.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Provide training and orientation for Child-Friendly Space animators on setting up and managing a Child-Friendly Space/centres, child rights, child participation, child protection (including the Child Safeguarding Policy), and provide ongoing support and mentoring to practice these concepts to volunteers and animators
    • Compile timely quantitative and qualitative updated data and reports using designated monitoring tools and forward to child protection in emergencies officers
    • In coordination with the Child Protection team members, support regular participatory activities with different groups of children to identify issues affecting children in their communities, and assist the teams to develop appropriate responses
    • Report general protection issues present in the operational areas to the field based Child protection team
    • Screen for and monitor protection needs and gaps in and around the Child-Friendly Spaces/centres
    • Supervise the animators working in the Child-Friendly Spaces/centre on a regular basis, ensuring that activities are implemented in an appropriate manner
    • Ensure a safe and child-friendly atmosphere in the Child-Friendly Space/centre
    • Ensure that equipment inventories are up to date and that replacement needs are highlighted.
    • Ensure internal referral systems are followed when Child protection cases are identified within the CFS/centre.
    • With the assistance of the animators conduct a daily visual assessment of the children and ensure a variety of structured games and activities within the Child-Friendly Space/centre, catering to the needs of children of different ages, genders, and abilities
    • Ensure that health and safety regulations are understood and followed and that health and safety incidents are logged
    • Contribute to the design of an overall programme contingency plan
    • In the event of a sudden influx facilitate the contingency plan process
    • Assist the animators  in solving problems arising in the Child-Friendly Spaces/centre
    • Assist the animators in working with children to develop new, creative activities as appropriate
    • Ensure the participation of all groups of children, especially children who are the most vulnerable
    • Ensure that all actors(officers, other child protection workers and community structures) are involved in promoting child participation in the child-friendly spaces/centre
    • Assist the animators in conducting parents’ and community meetings aimed at strengthening child-friendly activities.
    • Screen for and monitor protection needs and gaps in and around the Child Friendly Spaces/centres
    • Ensure CPC meetings and activities are held within the CFS
    • Attend camp/centre level  meetings
    • Develop weekly work plans in consultation with direct reports
    • Produce timely progress reports, including both quantitative and qualitative regarding CFS activities and attendance
    • Perform any other duties as requested by CP Officer

    Location (community):

    • Chabbal, Gongolon, Dusman and Dallori communities

    Qualification and Experience
    Essential:

    • Good communication skills with fluency in written and spoken English
    • Knowledge of community-based child protection approaches, preferably including experience in participatory approaches (PRA/PLA) and child participation methodologies.
    • Demonstrable ability to adapt to changing programme priorities and emergency priorities that may arise
    • Strong self-starter, able to take initiative and adapt to changing circumstances and priorities
    • Positive attitude towards community work with an emphasis on the ability to learn from communities and support innovative approaches to problem-solving
    • Commitment to Save the Children’s Child Protection Policy

    Desirable:

    • Knowledge of local language
    • People from those locations are highly encouraged to apply
    • Experience and skills in the management of staff
    • Experience in designing and facilitating training sessions
    • Understanding of the northeastern Nigeria  the dynamics of the conflict
    • Experience in working in an insecure environment

    Working Conditions
    The contract is based on a “need for work” basis and remuneration will be paid based on the tasks carried out. The volunteer may not work or be reimbursed for days beyond the maximum approved work days without prior written approval from SCI management. In no case shall the enumerator be reimbursed for more than eight (8) hours during an approved work day and may not be paid for work on Saturdays and Sundays unless agreed in advance.
