    The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) are now recruiting for an experienced leader to join and lead EatSafe, the Evidence and Action Towards Safe Nutritious Food program.  The Lead, Food Safety will bring deep knowledge of global food systems and program development and will provide overall quality assurance for the program and resulting knowledge products. This role is offered on a fixed term basis until the end of July 2024 and is open to applicants based in Washington D.C., United States, Geneva, Switzerland, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia or Abuja, Nigeria.

    The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN) is a Swiss-based foundation launched at the UN in 2002 to tackle the human suffering caused by malnutrition. Working with both governments and businesses, we aim to transform food systems so that they deliver more nutritious food for all people. In particular, we aim to make healthier food choices more desirable, more available, and more affordable. GAIN’s mission is to advance nutrition outcomes by improving consumption of nutritious and safe food for all people, especially the most vulnerable to malnutrition.

    About the Role

    The Lead, Food Safety provides overall strategic and operational leadership and oversight to EatSafe. They will bring deep knowledge of global food systems and program development/ management particularly in projects implemented in the global south.They will have ample experience working with USAID (HQ and Missions). They will build the food safety research portfolio, and will engage actively in dissemination of the findings, particularly with USAID Missions. The Lead will hold primary responsibility for liaising with USAID and other potential donors and consortium partners and will provide overall quality assurance for the program and resulting knowledge products.

    The Lead will also be responsible for integrating food safety into the larger GAIN portfolio in cooperation with the SMT and PST leadership. This role is offered on a fixed term basis until the end of July 2024 and is open to applicants based in Washington D.C., United States, Geneva, Switzerland, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia or Abuja, Nigeria.

    Specific duties include;

    • Being responsible for the overall planning, coordination, direction and management of the project to ensure adherence to programmatic quality in implementation, and USAID compliance and contractual requirements
    • Being responsible for budget related approvals for EatSafe including staffing, travel, contracts, consulting agreements, and procurements
    • Liaising with USAID and other donors, government, international and regional organizations, and other high-level stakeholders to ensure alignment in food safety research and actions
    • Providing support to the projects Knowledge Mobilization team to develop and implement a strategic approach to the storage of data and knowledge products Development new business for EatSafe
    • Being responsible for high quality delivery in time and budget, working closely with research and country teams
    • Taking responsibility for timely and quality reporting to donors in collaboration with GAIN’s Development Office
    • Working closely with the Senior Manager, ensures technical quality of the program both for EatSafe and Food Safety at GAIN.
    • Representing the consortium at nutrition, food systems and related events

    About You

    Applicants should possess extensive experience in the fields of international project development and management, fundraising, team building and leadership and have deep knowledge of food systems and food value chains. They should also have extensive experience working in developing country contexts and/or experience managing projects funded by USAIS. As well as this, applicants should have first-class people management and mentoring skills and be capable of working effectively within multi-cultural teams and while under pressure to meet organisational deadlines. Formal project management and/or leadership training would be advantageous.  

    In addition, applicants should hold an advanced degree in a field relevant to development, food systems, food safety, business etc., and be fluent in English, both written and spoken.

    About our Offer

    We are offering a competitive salary for this role, dependent on the experience of the successful applicant.

    The starting date for this role, to be agreed with the successful applicant, will not commence until after the 1st January 2022.
