    Chief Security Officer

    SUMMARY OF POSITION:

    The Chief Security Officer is charged with the responsibility of developing and implementing safety/security improvements that benefit the university’s assets, students, faculty, staff, visitors, and tenants. The duties will include but NOT limited to monitoring security officers to enforce security processes and procedures, ensuring quality standards, analyzing statistical data from the different law enforcement agencies and continuously adapt and innovate for maximum efficiency and profitability in accordance with the development philosophy of the American University of Nigeria.

    DETAILED LISTING OF RESPONSIBILITIES: 

    • Respond to all security concerns from students, faculty, staff and tenants
    • Effective telephone and reception/switchboard knowledge; use of alarm systems; operate and evaluate security camera systems/closed-circuit television (CCTV); retrieve and analyze information from security monitoring systems and CTV for use in criminal investigations.
    • Plan and conduct safety awareness meetings at all area assets annually.
    • Must be able to compose, edit, and proof read reports and correspondence.
    • Have instructional and supervisory ability.
    • Develop and maintain positive relations with students, faculty, staff, visitors, tenants, contractors, consultants, local law enforcement, community and groups or associations that benefit the university.
    • Possess current and up to date knowledge on relevant and specific approaches to university-based security.
    • Advice Senior Management on confidential or sensitive matters and act as a conduit between the University and the police at all levels in order to expedite solutions to difficult situations.
    • Receive and deal with any information that has a security dimension and deal with this in a confidential manner.
    • Carry out other duties as assigned by the Vice President, Safety and Security, and the President of AUN.

     Requirements for the position:

    • Bachelor's degree in security management, criminal justice, or a related field from a reputable tertiary institution.
    • Master's degree preferred.
    • Membership Certificate of the Nigerian Institute for Industrial Security would be a plus.
    • Certification as an Environment and Safety Manager is also a plus.
    • Extensive experience in campus security, law enforcement, or a related field, with at least 10 years of progressively responsible leadership roles.
    • Knowledge of security best practices, emergency management, and risk assessment.
    • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
    • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with diverse stakeholders.
    • Relevant certifications (e.g., Certified Protection Professional, Certified Emergency Manager) preferred.
    • Knowledge of relevant Nigerian laws and regulations is highly desirable.
    • Must be able to effectively handle crises.
    • Must be able to travel when directed, for work, tenant visits, and meetings.
    • Must maintain a valid driver license and current automobile insurance coverage

    Other requirements, abilities for the position:

    • Must be able to lift up to fifty (50) pounds using proper ergonomic techniques without assistance.
    • Must be proficient in and be able to use Microsoft Office to develop crime analysis reports and databases.
    • Know how to utilize CPR and first aid at work.
    • Strong critical thinking skills are required.
    • Excellent problem solving skills are required.
